Aren't Corky's and the Rendezvous the two mainstays in Memphis? I
believe the former is dry ribs; the latter, wet.

Rendezvous and Corky's are mainstays if you want to stay in the better
parts of town. They are typical ad most famous but not necessarily the
best.

Rendezvous is has a nice atmosphere and the dryribs are different thna
most are used to (get a cheese plate first).
Corky's is good but there are better.

If a hole in the wall is fine then we have many great places.
Leonards BBQ has a great sandwich (the slaw makes it).
Central BBQ being the newest addition to the mix of recommendables.
Paynes is pretty good but a crummy places to go to.
Interstate is good if you want to try the BBQ spagetti.
Lots of people are fond of the joints on Beale Street but I can't say
that I have ever eaten at BBs or Blues City.

***For a tourist on their own, I'd say go to Rendezvous first (barhop
down Beale afterwards) and then go to Corky's (main location on poplar
ave) the next day.***

(I left a few typos in there just fer Denny)

Here are my recommendations ---- I have tried them all.

For the food alone------

Central BBQ has the most authentic BBQ ribs in Memphis (IMHO).

Interstate BBQ has the best sandwich in Memphis.

The BBQ Shop on Madison Avenue may be the best all-around BBQ place in the
whole city.

For an experience in a Great Rib Joint-----

Rendezvous is the place to go in Memphis for the atmosphere alone. Their
Ribs are not Barbecue Ribs. They are Char-grilled for about 2-3 hours and
then dipped in a water and Vinegar Bath-- followed by a liberal covering of
Dry spices (the famous Memphis "Dry" Rib).

These are just my opinions. As always, the best barbecue in Memphis is in
somebody's backyard.

In Nashville for Q I'd go to Mary's Pit BBQ if you want real q and are
not concerned about a nice sit down meal.

Anyone who's not happy woith a hole in the wall will never eat truly
great BBQ!

One of my favoprites, and its not really as scary as it might look. Just
don't go on Saturday night.

I don't like their thick ketchupy sauce.

Go there for music and a party. BBQ isn't bad, but it isn't good, either.

Corky's doesn't sell BBQ. Sonny's in Florida likewise does not.

I would recommend to your friend to look for smoke when in between
Memphis and Nash-Vegas. Should be plenny roadside pits rollin' smoke.

The best BBQ in Tn is located on Hwy 431 between Joelton and
Springfield. Just a shack in the man's driveway. He's an old black man
and he made the news more than once as the best Q in Tn.

Gotta get there early on a Saturday as that's the only day he sells. He
sells from the time he opens until he runs out.

One more place would be between Ashland City and Clarksville. More
toward the Clarksville end than the other.

Don't know if it has a name or not, but it was just a gas station /
eatery last time I was there and that's been a few years.

Hwy 12 runs supposedly north/south. Heading north, this joint is on the
left.

Both these places take a little looking for when you're not from there.
That's part of the fun though. BBQ was never quick, fast and convenient.

TFM,
The place on Hwy 12 is called Excell Grocery. It used to be known as
Big Daddy's. The q is still excellent. A Korean couple bought the
place a few years ago, and they were smart enough to learn to cook the q
just like Big Daddy did. I go out there almost every Friday for lunch.
They have q every day, but it's fresh on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Also, there's a place called Baggett's BBQ on Stroudsville Road near
where it intersects Trough Springs Road just inside Robertson county.
Again, just a shack in a yard, but great q. It's open on Friday and
Saturday only.

Both of these places are authentic, and cook on wood only.

I'm not familiar with the place on highway 431...can you tell me more
about it? I'd like to find it and sample the q. I bet that's the guy
that does parties for people with his portable pit. If so, he's the man.
