God forgive me for stickin' my nose in here, my sons, but methinks y'all
might be throwin' that word around just a bit too loosely even if you're
referring to Kevvie. Seein' as how the word, now, and especially now, seems
to refer to ones buddies sort of as though you might be saying "my man"
instead. Either way, whichever way it is meant to be taken, it doesnt fit
the situation. You are certainly not offering it up a a term of respect,
therefore it *is* being used as a racial epithet. Adding the word Honky to
the front of it doesn't, I dont think, cancel out the negative connotation
naturally inferred when one hears a word such a ******. It would be
unrealistic to say there could ever be white ******s or black non-******s
(please understand this is just an example as I am not calling anyone a
******) because the word itself was historically used to describe*all*
blacks, just as honky was used to describe all whites.

Seems to me it would be less insulting to *others* and far more practical
just to call little Kevvie the Masturbating Wonderboy something a little
more milktoasty....like maybe....I dunno....mother****er or asshole. Or even
cumblossom might work if ya wanted to lean in that direction.

Just my opinion of course. I ain't callin' ya racist or anything.<g>

Okay folks, could we just back off and can it for a second.

In an attempt to try to steer this thread back from the flamewar side,
I'd like to ask a few pointed (and some not so pointed) questions :

1: Kevin. I've noted that you often reply to folks who spam this
newsgroup with messages berating them for doing so. Your messages
tend to lean toward the condescending, regardless of whether the
person commiting the act of spam seems to have done so with malice
aforethought or not. Seems to me that IF you must take it upon
yourself to act as a USENET cop, at least your initial response could
be a bit more...well, polite. At least give people one opportunity to
defend themselves before breaking out the vitriol.

2) Yeah, it DOES matter what someone's intentions were. Sorry to the
hardliners, but intent matters a LOT. In fact, using the recent
events in New Orleans, there were probably LOTS of people who went
about trying to do good things but making mistakes while doing it.
When stuff like that happens, often protocol goes out the window. In
my mind, someone trying to do the right thing, but doing it the wrong
way needs a gentle lesson, not ridicule. Someone show me how I'm wrong
here...anybody..?

3): Kevin: It occurs to me that often (at least in THIS newsgroup)
your attempts to curb SPAM (as you see it) seem to spark much longer
off-topic threads than would likely have occured if you had either
been more polite and informational in your responses, or had not
responded at all and let people either reply or not, or killfile as
they saw fit. Seems you yourself may be your own worst enemy, so to
speak, in this regard.

3) Everyone else: Okay, it's clear that some of you are...shall we
say, 'less fond" of Kevin than of many of the actual spammers.
AND...many of you give him grief for his vitriol....but soimehow folks
always seem to have to go tit for tat in the name-calling arena.
Seems to me that if you are gonna invoke the "Pot/Kettle/Black"
discussion, if you are gonna add in namecalling yourself, you'd better
get a mirror pretty darned quick.

Let me check: You are calling someone names to show them that calling
someone names is wrong. Is that it? Seems a bit....silly.

4) Everyone: Use of the N-Word does not a racist make. Sure, some
folks are gonna be offended by any use of the word. Some will be
offended only depending on who uses it. Pretty much any time someone
uses it in a public forum nowadays they should know they are on shaky
ground, however, I don't think it's too fair to make grand
generalizations on folks for using this or other possibly inflammatory
words once in a rare occasion on a usenet group.

Anyway, that's about it. Oh, one more thing....as for TFM(tm), I
will, as a self-appointed half-representative of the entire
African-American population of the USA, give him at least a free pass
for that long ago post with the MLK reference. He's always been
totally cool with me (and heck, I was at his wedding) and has not
shown me anything that would indicate their being a racist bone in his
body. Doesn't mean I would leave an open beer of mine unattended
within 100 feet of him though.....

;-)

The above rant is just my 2 cents worth. You go on and do what you
want.

I really don't much care about intention. I've had it with spammers,
market-droids, advertisers, pollsters, demographers, public-relations
specialists, and all the other self-important bozos who think that
they have some sort of God-given right to shove their message down our
throats. Here's my "gentle lesson" for all of them, well-intentioned
or not, courtesy of John Prine.

I don't want your big French Fry
I don't want your car
I don't want to buy no soap
From no washed-up movie star
You are so much louder
Than the show I wanna hear
With your sugarless gum
Gee, but I'm dumb
Non-alcoholic beer
It's enough to make a grown man
Blow up his own TV
Quit hollerin' at me
Quit hollerin' at me

I heard you the first time
I heard myself say
Seems like the little woman
Is getting bigger every day
You don't have to tell the neighbors
A little silence ain't no sin
They already think my name is
Where in the hell you been?
Louder, louder, louder, louder, louder
Constantly
Quit hollerin' at me
Quit hollerin' at me
Whoa oh whoa oh
Sweet Serenity
Whoa oh whoa oh
Quit hollerin' at me
Quit hollerin' at me

Ain't it great at the end of the day
When there ain't no sound around
Just me and the fence post
Staring each other down
Nothing but a big bunch of nothing
Driving me insane
Cause there ain't no voice that's louder
Than the one inside my brain
Hey you go on
Go on and let me be
Quit hollerin' at me
Quit hollerin' at me
Whoa oh whoa oh
Sweet Serenity
Whoa oh whoa oh
Quit hollerin' at me
Quit hollerin' at me
Quit hollerin' at me
Quit hollerin' at me
Quit hollerin' at me

While that is from a Mel Brooks movie, the odds are very good that that

Um, Kevin?

Of the 62 posts in this thread, the original poster made 6 posts,
while you have made over twice as many (13). In comparing those posts
I think it fair to say that any impartial observer would find yours to
be far more agressive, negative and some (including a number of the
A.F.B. regualars who have responded, offensive.

In your messages to both to the original poster and to those who you
disagree with you repeatedly make assumptions about their INTENT
(which you say you don't care about) and use these assumptions to
bolster your arguments against them:
For example:

KEVIN: "You think that your message is so important that you can
ignore prohibitions against spamming, including those in your ISP's
Acceptable Use Policy"

Do you really think that the original poster was both aware of and
intentionally disregarding their ISPs Acceptable Use Policy?

You often resort to name calling ("self-important bozos", "racist",
"ignorant racist" "WebTVe", "You are a sad, pathetic, creepy little
man.", etc.), yet chastise other when they resort to the same.

It also seems that as threads you are involved in get longer, your
statements in them become more pedantic - you start focusing on a
minot point ( that someone did not answer one of your questions)
rather than the overarching point of the thread.

If the whole intent of your posts with this recurring theme (pointing
out to people that they are spammers) is to educate people to the
error of their ways, as indicated in your eigth post in this
particular thread:

"It really is simple: You're spamming. "

...then I have just one question for you.:

Couldn't you find a more constructive way to do it?

You have repeatedly chastised those who take you to task for your
approach and have repeatedly been hypocritical in doing so. You have
ridiculed those you consider "ignorant" rather than attempt to
constructively educate them.

Finally, based on the years of such threads, is seems clear to me that
ultimately, you simply don't care to engage with others in a
reasonable, respectful manner, especially if they have said or
implied something that you disagree with, or if you deem them somehow
'less' than you (ignorant, racist, etc.).

To me, that seems like a truer form of ignorance than unintentionally
breaking one's ISP Acceptable use policy while trying to help people

You're finally right about something, Kevvie. One week of toying with you
has reminded me of why I kf'd you last year. So back ya go. Don't bother
replying. You really are gone and I won't see anymore of your
egocentricities.

Behind your sham chivalry, I contend, lurk some nasty tendencies to sadism,
egocentricity, rebellion and neurosis. Hopefully, someday, you will grow
out of your egocentrism, observe other players, gradually begin to
co-operate with others, and finally in conjunction with a group arrive at a
reciprocal agreement embodying definite rules of play.

'Til then, vaya con Dios!

Na, bigfoot is in Minnesota. He has been spotted and photographed here.
Photograph was in an issue of the Enquirer.

Maybe though bigfoot had a baby and Georgia has the baby. I haven't
read the Enquirer in a while to keep up on these newsworthy events !!!

Amen. I have been around this group for several years (though less in
the last year or so) and find Kevin to be the most obnoxious human being
ever. For the life of me, I just can't understand why he gets his
jolly's being such an obnoxious person. He has valuable knowledge to
contribute, but for the most part, he chooses to ignore that.

Kevin,

That's it?

That is your response to all of the points made? To reiterate the
name calling and to say that folks can killfile you or not read your
posts?

I already made my point about namecalling, and as for your point about
not reading posts and/or killfiling - the very same could be said
about you in terms of dealing with the folks you consider spammers.
You could ignore them. You could killfile them immediately.

And the result would be (at least based on recent history and using
this thread as an example): Far fewer off-topic posts in this
newsgroup.

So, to paraphase Kevin S. Wilson: What would happen if everyone,
including you, did that instead of instigating a thread full of
negativity?

Yeah, that's it, but you shouldn't take it personally. I just don't
give much of a red rat's ass about AFB these days, or about Usenet in
general. You might feel the same way if some sad, pathetic, creepy
coward had been e-mailing your boss for months in an attempt to get
you fired over your participation in Usenet. And, yes, I'm referring
to Dan Krueger, a sad, pathetic, creepy coward.

Chef, you talk about off-topic posts in AFB, but a close reading of
this group would indicate there's just about no such thing. AFB is
filled with grumpy old men of all ages who want to natter incessently
about the weather, drinking, politics, weather, drinking, and weather
and drinking. Yawn. They would hardly ever post about BBQ if it
weren't for the steady supply of newbies wanting to know what $300
pile-of-tin gasser they should buy on their next trip to Home Depot.
Double yawn.

Dan Krueger is one of AFB's regulars. It was here that I first came to
his creepy attention and it was about posts to AFB that he first began
complaining to my boss. Yet only ONE person from AFB has publicly said
that he is a loathsome, reprehensible coward for doing so. I figure
that any group containing a creep like Krueger -- and apparently
willing to countenance his creepy stalking -- can just go **** up a
rope. The fact that posts to AFB are by and large irrelevant makes me
care even less about debating with you or anyone else the
signal-to-noise ratio in AFB.

Kevin,

If all you say is true, then I really don't understand your actions.
If you don't care...if you REALLY don't care (and you have said
repeatedly) then why do you bother?

Why do you bother to reply to the spammers? Why do you bother taking
the time to ridicule people on these same newsgroups that you "don't
care" about because of their choice of gas grill or internet provider?

You say a lot. More often than not your actions do not match your
words.

If someone is harrassing you, you should be telling the authorities,
not trying (apparently) to drum up support on an internet newsgroup.

I don't take it personally. I just was attempting to discuss the
situation and the issues you and others have brought up in this
newsgroup....and tried to do so without resorting to the namecalling
and other silliness that seems to prevail at times around here. You've
not really responded in kind and I have to assume that you don't care
to (as you've stated).

So...I will assume that if you really don't care, that we won't be
seeing much from you here in the future. Unless you DO care on some
level, even if it is that you like stirring the pot and ticking people
off. If that is the case then I expect we will just keep seing more
of the same. If so....well, I think that's too bad. I really think
your time and effort could be better spent.
