No lump in Tampa!

There was *one* Wal-mart around here that carried RO lump. Not anymore.

I had to get ****ing briquettes. Royal Oak, but briquettes nonetheless.

Gonna grill some burgers on it in a bit to test it out. If it's ok, I'll
use it in the WSM tomorrow on a chicken.

I'm bummed. This means it's back to Cowboy for me until I find RO again
locally. (And I *used* to have the ultimate connection........Goddammit!)

Lowes here in Colorado Springs has recently started carrying a couple of
different Lump varieties. Also check whole foods stores. I have also a
Grill/Patio store here in town that keeps a few bags on hand. Might look
for one of those there.

I'm in Zephyrhills (33542) About 30 miles northeast of Tampa Proper.

Doesn't have to be Royal Oak, just something affordable other than Cowboy.

Next time you are in Orlando, stop by Outdoor World. I bought some
there a while back. Can't remember the brand but it was good and cheap.

I have a nasty feeling that something is happening to/at Royal Oak,
FatMan. It's starting to get scarce here at the Canadian Tire shops -
my suppliers for the last 10 years. I'm down to 10 or 12 bags and
beginning to worry. I won't be reduced to Briquettes, but the other
available stuff costs more money and doesn't look at all good.

Whole Foods. I'ts a re-labled Royal Oak and not expensive.

It's amazing that Royal Oak quit selling to the public at the
insistance of Mall-Wort and now Wally doesn't even stock or sell any
lump at all.

If you *MUST* use briquettes, any brand other than Kingsford has much
less fillers and doesn't stink as bad.

BOB
if we can figure out a way to get it to you, I've got some good
extruded coconut lump for you to try

Tom Puskar 05-09-2005 04:50 PM

Hi, I'm a new guy who just started BBQing and reading this group. My
experience until now has been dogs, burgers, chicken and of course the
occasional steak on my propane grill. I'm looking forward to some real BBQ.

I tried my first batch of ribs yesterday in my Charm Glow Silver smoker and
the results were mediocre. I used Kingsford charcoal and some mesquite
blocks I got at Lowes's AFTER I was done I noted this thread. I gather
Kingsford briquettes aren't the fuel of choice!!!

I'm making my way through the BBQ FAQ but haven't got to the charcoal/fuel
part yet.

What are RO and Cowboy? I presume they are brands but of what? I'm in
central NJ and have Lowe's, Wal-mart, Home Depot to choose from.

Thanks,

Tom in Howell, NJ

RO = Royal Oak. Both are brands of lump charcoal, AKA carbonized
hardwood.

PS: Please don't top post.

RO is Royal Oak (the real deal), Cowboy is wood scraps made into charcoal.

Here's a good place for lump info, not all of which is available to you in
your area though:

http://www.nakedwhiz.com/lumpindexpage.htm?bag

If you do a search of Google Groups for this group and search "New
Jersey+lump" you'll probably come across some info.

Restaraunt supply places and some hardwood stores (Not Home Depot though)
carry lump too.

One who works 5 minutes from Lazzari's distribution center (aint I lucky?),

I have the same problem the wal-Mart in Newton, Kansas carried Royal Oak
this year, both lump and briquettes. I have used about 15 10lb bags
lump. Last week they were out of both. May have some next summer.
Bummer. Back to a bout a 25 mile drive for good lump.
