Cleaning a grill - newbie question?

Hi ya`ll - hope you don`t mind answering a question from a newbie. We`re
not hard core BBQ`ers/grillers/cooks users here, but we though we`d
break out this old little charcoal grill we had laying around and use it
today.

We haven`t used this grill in a few years. The grill/grate part - where
you lay the food - is black and kind of rusty. We tried scubbing it with
a scrubby pad and dish soap, but weren`t able to get much of it off. We
have used stuff in a spray can before labeled as "grlll cleaner", but BF
claims it was useless.

Is it ok to cook our food on this grill? And any suggestions for
cleaning it? We have long since lost the manual, and we really don`t
even do this often.

Thanks alot to anyone who reads or replies - and happy 4th to all! Happy
eating!

If the grate is rusty I would replace it personally.
You can pick up a new grate very reasonably priced at your local Ace,Lowes,
(dare I say wal-mart) etc.....
Other than that just put a bunch of lump or charcoil in it and let it burn
all the old stuff off for a while before using it.

You can clean the rust with a steel brush, the rest.......burn it of.

good luck,

Adriaan

The only grill cleaner that I find that works is easy off oven cleaner. You
might try putting it in the oven and running a self clean cycle. OTherwise
put it over the coals as they are heating up and sterilize it. Nothing will
help if its rust but you can still cook on it. if you are concerned, use
some tin foil between the food and the grill. poke holes in it to let the
grease thru.

A little Brillo didn't get it off?

Put over high flame and coat with oil...

There's two ways to deal with that problem.

1. Spray a heavy coat of 'EasyOff' oven cleaner on it and wait about twenty
minutes before hosing it off. If you manage to do this in the middle of the
oil spot in your driveway, you'll kill two birds with one stone. Don't mess
with the perfumy, no fumes junk. Use only the real thing. (Some of the
big box supermarkets sell their own brand of oven cleaner that's identical
in active ingredients to the name brands and 1/3 the price.)

2. Build a good hot fire in the grill and put the grate over it. After a
spell,
turn the grate over to get the other side. When you think you've got it
hot enough on both sides, take it off and let it cool down. When it's
cool, throw it down flatwise on the concrete as hard as you can. Most
of the remaining crap will fly off of it. Use the hose to finish the job AND
clean the crap off your driveway.
