I have used two kinds for smoker temps Maverick ET-73 Dual Probe and my favourite Thermapen. Fastest most accurate thermometer besides a infrared. They are not cheap but they last and are used by most competition teams.

Infrared thermometer's are not useful for measuring internal temps, but the
Thermapen is terrific for that task. The Maverick's are a bit spendy, but
can do a good job monitoring internal pit temps. I prefer a cheaper
Polder-style knockoff.

I useta have a maverick ET7 and it was a total POS. I use cheapy Taylors
now. As long as they read icewater and boilingwater 'somewhat
accurately',I;m fine.

monroe(still rollin pennies for my first thermapen)
