people ever discuss are rational subjects of debate, or at least that

The author also seems to be under the misapprehension that rational
discussions should proceed on a point by point basis and that if one
argument is shown to be faulty the whole thesis collapses.

That assumes that the thesis is strictly logically coherent in the first
place. This is not always the case. The propounder of the thesis might
be mistaken in relying on an argument that is later shown to be faulty.
