Piedmont: There are well over 1700 recipes in the 2 files. Cumbersome
to manage as a text file. Just grab a copy of MasterCook 9.0 (or 11.0
it's released now.) The archive files loaded real nice, by recipe, and
the categories too. Highly recommended. About 10 bucks for 9.0. From
Valusoft.

You need to change your preferences or set your browser to ask you first
what to use.

the files come zipped, i unzip with two different programs thinking it might
make a difference, the unzipped files i am able to select another program to
open with which i thought would have been a word processor, i used works,
and that didn't work. i had these years ago and wonder if the newly
downloaded files are corrupt?

Hold down the shift key when you do a right click-open. It
will have two options, the second being "open with?".

craigster who used right click quick view yesterday to see
an Excel sheet w/o Excel loaded.

Did you actually READ the instructions that came with the file?
They're not adobe files, their Mastercook recipe files.

Just for the heck of it, I tried to download them to my Mastercook 7. It
did not recognize the format.

Its MC 9 or better, IIRC. Read the instructions. Then explain them
to Pee'dmont. He'd like that :-)

I think it was 4 or older. IIRC, Version 4 was the one in 96-97. I have
it somewhere around here, but I don't think it will run very well on XP.

Maybe. I just glanced at the instrructions and I remember seeing
Version 9 and Verison 11 (*or was that the Mastercook page?!).

Doesn't matter. The instructions point out a couple of freeware
utilities that will decode the files.

brick's suggestions worked, wordpad actually opened and showed them!
i was also able to import them into MasterCook, latest version.
i wanted them in text so i could upload to google doc where i won't lose
them again!

You are much too kind, Brick. Unfortunately he'll be whining and
complaining again here in a week about how he can't get his bottle
of rub open, and somebody will offer to drive the 120 miles and open
it for him. And he'll gladly accept the offer all the while posting
to AFB about why it's not open yet.

You can give a hungry man a fish...

You're welcome. Too bad you refused to read the instructions until
Brick came along and shut your ass up as a courtesy to the rest of
the group.

FWIW, notepad also opens them without any renaming going on. Just
tell notepad to open it and it does. Notepad don't have a ruler though
so it's harder to read the long lines with wrap only at the extreme screen
edges.

Yes you can, but as a matter of fact, it's already a text file. MXP =
Master Cook Export = Textfile. It's not really formatted in the normal
sense, but rather arranged in a particular order.
