Garbage or not?

Hello from Miss Don't Know Nuthin'. The previous tenant abandoned a
Weber go-anywhere gas grill on the balcony of my apartment. All the
pieces are there but the 'flavorizor' tent-shaped thingy that goes
over the gas pipe thingy is half gone - rusted? burnt? And I know
just enough to realize that grilling without it is basically using a
very inconvenient gas stove.

Anyway, I am poor, like barely-making-ends-meet poor, so if I can get
this thing to work without investing more than say five bucks, I would
be very excited. I just plan on grilling small amounts of meat for
two -- fajita meat, vietnamese-style grilled pork, steak teriyaki.
Any advice?

Or should I just unhitch all the gas accoutrements and fill it with
charcoal?

You could check with Weber. They're usually pretty good about making
spare parts available, although getting any part(s) for $5 may be a
stretch. They should have contact info at their web site.

Thanks, Bob -- I should have said that the replacement from Weber is
ten bucks, plus five bucks shipping, making a 15 dollar investment in
something that is 49 bucks in stores. I am hoping for a supercheap,
tinfoil-and-chewing-gum alternative.

Replacement flavorizer bars are sold at the local Ace Hardware. That being
said, there's nothing all that special about them, that they couldn't be
replaced by some light weight (non-galvanized) angle steel stock.

The function is to keep the drippings from clogging the gas jets, and have
something hot to vaporize as much of the drippings into smoke as is
feasible.

A good, local, old-style hardware store is your friend.

Patriarch, my friend! My tinfoil-and-bubblegum hero! Thanks for the
tip! I may not exactly know what 'light weight (non-galvanized) angle
steel stock'is, but I now have a magic phrase to utter when marching
into the local hardware store.

And you could take the old one in with you in a bag, and say "I need to
replace this, cheaply, please."

Works best with a local, 'experienced' hardware store. Don't waste your
time with the average Home Depot or Lowe's.

Good luck!

Unfortunately, the BORGs (Big Ole Retail Giants) have assimilated the
local hardware stores here. The locals have all gone out of business.

The answer will be found at any machine shop. The piece needed is
probably on the floor next to the scap pile. Machine shops are getting
to be even rarer than local hardware stores....

Around here, that's True Value (Handyman). They have a service counter
with the wise old owls back in the corner.

Now, machine shops I got. I was the Bookmobile Lady for six years,
and the only girl-type-person the guys down at Central Shops ever saw.
It would be a nice excuse to wander by Central and ask for a little
scrap. Heck, maybe they'll make me a smoker!

If it's the one I'm thinking of, they're only about $30 brand new. Wal-Mart
probably is closing them out about now.

Well the real part is not much more than aluminum foil. I bought one for SWMBO
for when I was out of town. If you'd like I can post a pic to a.b.f.

Not so here in SAT. There are quite a few Ace & Tru Value stores still open
here.

There are those of us who will only go to the big box as a last resort.

You got my vote on that! I'll even let the little guy order it, if it won't
take forever, before I go to HomeBlowes, etc.
