Barbecue (alt.food.barbecue) Discuss barbecue and grilling--southern style "low and slow" smoking of ribs, shoulders and briskets, as well as direct heat grilling of everything from burgers to salmon to vegetables.

They vary by sanctioning body. FBA (Florida BBQ Assoc.) requires a 4 hour
seminar that includes judging several turn in boxes in 2 or more categories.
Several FBA contests including this weekend's Funcook have a judge's seminar
on the Friday afternoon prior to the contest. That makes you a trained
judge. Once you have judged your first FBA contest you are then a certified
judge. You must judge at least once per year in order to maintain your
certification. MIM (Memphis in May) training is a full day with a written
test at the beginning and the end (same test) and actual on-site and blind
judging. You then have to judge 2 MIM contests to be certified. KCBS has a
certified judge's school that is usually held on the Thursday or Friday
before a KCBS event. I don't know what their rules are but you can visit the
FBA website http://www.flbbq.org and click on the links page for access to
the KCBS website.
