I am sure you can find an online ag market report. I recall seeing
something this week about prices dropping to around $0.90/lb in
Chicago. If you are anywhere near farm/beef country, there will be an
early morning radio broadcast to the producers that will invariably
give the latest prices in some appropriate market.

Thanks everyone, gives me a gauge. We have lots of cattle around here, I
will now look into purchasing and splitting with friends a whole dang cow.
Thankx again

My experience with buying beef 'by the cow' is though the per pound
price is less, I ended up with meat I didn't really want. Cube steaks
was one. And for me I also ended up eating more beef than I should,
cause that's what I had in the freezer. The freezer was not large enough
to have both a large quantity of cow and pig.

A better alternative for me, is to watch the ads for the local grocery
stores and buy the cuts of meat I like when on sale. I recently bought 6
NY Strips for $20. Each is about .75 pounds, a decent size for me. They
were in packages of 2. I broke them open and wrapped them individually
in freezer paper.

In these parts, it is not uncommon to see a 2 for 1 sale on something at
least once a month. Though I do not see butts or shoulders on sale
often, damn it. But the regular price is around $1.50 so I don't care so
much about getting it on sale.

Of course YMMV.

Ole' Hippy wanted to know if anyone have an idea of the going price
for beef on the hoof?

For today's market prices try this:
http://www.ams.usda.gov/lsmnpubs/NatSum.htm

Click on National Summary Reports - Graphs & Links which will take you
to some Daily Summary Reports for more than just cattle; which are
shown in a PDF file. You will find the average price paid for live
cattle plus the USDA National Avg. (wholesale/packer) prices for sides
and primal cuts; lots of interesting information concerning pricing of
all livestock.
