Anyone ever create one? Is there even a desire for one?

I know about the "food" group and it is a nice place.

But one for just Q, grilling, and things that go with both would be a
great place to share pics of us and the things we create, our pits,
tools, mistakes, and ideas.

alt.binaries.food works fine for me. You could always put BBQ at the
beginning of your Subject line, eh?

alt.binaries.food was started (or rather, revived) by the folks here at
AFB back in late 2002/early 2003 or so, for just that purpose. Eventually
people started posting all sorts of food-related pics. And then people
started posting pictures of construction sites, houses, homeless people,
guns, tanks, and anything else they could think of to defeat the purpose
of the group.

So good luck with that.

Huhn, last time I was there it seemed to be dominated by two people,
one was some Euro dude who posted tons of printer quality pix of
everything and anything in his kitchen. He made nice stuff, but jeeze,
enough already. And I forget the other person, in any case it was way
too much bandwidth for too little I was interested in seeing. Guess I
should use killfiles? *shrug*

Sqwertz has a point, there's got to be a ton of inactive binary
groups, who care about the name, it coule be alt.binaries.belly-button
for all we should care, we could agree to use it, and if and when the
same thing happen that it becomes too spammy, move on to a different
inactive one.

You can't change a text group to binaries. Pretty much all news servers
out there now restrict binary postings to groups that begin with
alt.binaries. And many news providers nowadays don't even give you access
to to alt.binaries. And of course the new trend is ISP's not even
offering Usenet, period.

You can however post links to pictures in your text posts, which is really
how it should be done.

A description of what your link depicts should be mandatory. Which is why
I don't really hang out in ABF any more. Too many people post pictures
with no explanation of what it is or how they cooked it. They're more
focused on getting a good picture or just making a post than describing
the food. It takes 1 to post a picture, three to ask what it is, and then
maybe they'll tell you. Maybe not.

I always make a point to describe, often in-depth, how I cooked the dish,
which ingredients I prefer, what I'd do differently next time, etc...
While the pictures may not be that great, it's the substance that counts
more.

Would you buy a cookbook that only contains pictures? No

Do you own a cookbook that doesn't have any pictures? Yes.

seems pretty universal, eh?

There are a good many groups to discuss food. Barbecue and grilling
are featured as you probably know at alt.food.barbecue. alt.binaries.food
was specifically chartered to display pictures for all of the food related
groups. It was not AFAIK intended to ever be a discussion group. Perhaps
EskWired will comment on that.

I personally have no desire for an additional group related to barbecue
and grilling. The current setup is quite satisfactory as far as I'm
concerned.
But then I have no desire to cruise more then a couple of newsgroups. All
of my interests are pretty well addressed in just two newsgroups, afb and
abf.

This group is quite safe. It is very difficult if not impossible to remove
an active group. The only way the group could be changed is to remove
it completely with a remgroup message which would require significant
justification and then post a newgroup message again with adequate
justification to inaugorate the newgroup.

What Steve said. I also hate picture posts in a group that fail to explain
what it is. And in a food group, failure to describe how it's made should
be a hanging offense. Get real. If you don't want to share, don't post at
all. If you want to brag about a secret recipe or ingredient do it some-
where else. On the other hand, describe it in the first post and we can
eliminate a lot of static.

In many cases, a word picture is more then sufficient and that can be done
just as well in the text group.

VegA wasn't around six years ago that I remember. And what's this
"we" stuff? I seem to remember there was only one person taking the
heat for endangering the tenuous hold that abf had with a few ISP's at
the time. In fact I seem to remember a serious attempt to organize a
lynching party.

The current setup works just fine for me, but some good points
have been made. To an extent, any group becomes a social group.
It's the nature of the beast. That's not to say that bare tits should
be allowed in church. In the same vein, cathedrals, fast cars and
bums sleeping it off in the cab of a junk truck have no place in a
food group.

Most folks want to belong somewhere. Hints that certain behavior
should be curtailed should suffice. We know how to handle the
hardcore offenders.

I must admit that I have been turned off a time or two by multiple
mindless posts of nothingness having nothing to do with food.
I guess I wish that I was guiltless, but alas I have also erred a
time or two. I'll try to do better.

It seems to be a fact Nick, but just as the internet is managed if not
policed
by an unlisted, unidentified "good old boys" group, individual newsgroups
could/can be moderated the same way. Unless the "noise" is generated by
the many rather then by the few, then those few should be susceptible to
the views of the many, else 'plonk'. Perhaps the "many" have become too
complacent. If we can't even manage a newsgroup, what chance do we
have as a nation?

I think sometimes that can be a good thing (only speaking about a
Usenet group). There is a group that I have posted in for over 10
years. What has happened is that many folks there have now been
acquaintances for that long. We have had many real-life get togethers
and picnics and even a little romance. ;-)

The result is that there is a lot of off-topic discussion because
everyone has become friends and it has become a place to discuss all
of life's issues. It is "bigger" than the original topic.

However, I can see how that would be a bad thing in most groups (maybe
here as well) because it dilutes the actual on topic info.

Now, taking your sentence on a broader level.... Hmmmm... Where is

I agree with you about OT posts (and thread drift), Jay. Sometimes it gets
out of hand and some folks object to any of it. Hell, I'm having a brief
exchange with a guy on soc.culture.iranian about this weekend's Ham Radio
Field Day! A lot of the folks here and on a.b.f have become friends and had
several get togethers over the years. When someone gets sick or has a

I don't know about that. I think it was more of a remove all traces of Bush
vote.

Take it to alt.whatever.politics if you want to engage in polarized
political debate, which we keep out of AFB. Suffice it to say that I didn't
vote for Obama (whom I despise) or McLame, and I don't want to drag this NG
into the same type of crap political discussions that rage on, mindlessly,
