We've had this type less than 3 years and today I just sent a note to the manufacturer to find out why its no longer brewing the full reservoir and instead does only a few cups, leaving water in the reservoir. Filter in or filter out makes no difference. A second or third brew cycle will process the remaining water. However, considering the cost and the brandname this shouldn't be happening. Will consider another brand since this is our second cuisinart having had different difficulties with the first.
I loved Cuisineart's thermal coffemaker so much that I bought two more carafes. After two uses, they each leaked -- the gasket between the plastic handle/collar and metal pot failed. CUISINART REFUSED TO STAND BEHIND THEM, REFUSED REPLACEMENT, REFUSED REFUND! Two months later, the carafe that originally came with the coffemaker failed the same way. I have some very expensive useless junk!
Here's what you gotta do EVERY MORNING or night before bed if you want to make fresh ground coffee. First take out the grinder apparatus, there is a clear round disk with uniquely difficult to clean crevices caked with water-saturated coffee grounds. You can't get in there with your fingers so maybe a butter knife and a paper towel is best. Then there is the canal which is a curved tunnel full of crevices caked with partially ground beans and still more saturated coffee grounds. Then there is the grinding bowl with yes, even still more coffee grounds (The bowel is round so it's not difficult to clean - ie. you can just use your hand- no butter knife needed. The rest is just like making regular coffee. But here's the thing about the mop: Imagine, it's 5:30am you snooze anxiously because you can hear your trusty Grind and Brew preparing your coffee for you... but instead of a nice pot of coffee... "NOT AGAIN!" the filter tray has once again popped out of place and instead of a pot full of coffee you have a counter-top and floor full of coffee. So get a mop, get a sponge, clean it all up and then repeat the first paragraph, wait 15 more minutes and "ahhh" that's some good fresh coffee. You might throw travel mug in with your purchase, because you're gonna lose about 25 minutes once or twice a month with this one.
People will complain about just about anything. It's in our human nature I suppose... but let's address what this coffee maker does and how well it does it at the price you're paying. Does this coffee maker make world class coffee? Will you impress Italian barristas with your crazy coffee skilz? Of course not. This is a simple coffee grinder, drip coffee maker combo unit that is a huge step up from those cheesy plastic Mr Coffee type coffee makers. Yeah, you can spend hundreds buying burr grinders and complex machines to make your coffee.... but for the functionality at the price, I've yet to see anything easier and better than this Cuisinart. (for full disclosu I actually do own a burr grinder and a vacuum-pot coffee maker. The grinder alone cost almost as much as this coffee maker cost me).I've owned this coffee maker since the fall of 2004 and I recommend it highly. I bought it because I was living with a woman who got up two hours before I did and I wanted to make her morning a little easier. Also, I wanted to make our weekend mornings a little more cozy (lazy sunday mornings in bed with fresh coffee). This coffee maker accomplished both. Four and a half years later, this Cuisinart outlasted my relationship (and that's for the best, really). At night, give this sucker beans and water... and it'll give you a pot of fresh ground coffee in the morning at whatever time you tell it to.It's a little messy, so you'll have to clean out the coffee grinder area from time to time. I'm pretty anal, so I probably cleaned it up more often than you will.It looks great in my kitchen, but my favorite aspect of this coffee maker is the actual coffee pot (the carafe). If I make coffee at 8am and decide to pour another cup at 10, it's still very hot. And if I pour another cup at 1pm, it's still hot. Don't buy the cheaper glass-pot version. The one on this page is the one you want. Definitely.
became so frustrated with cleaning this device I tossed into into the garage last weekend (OK--maybe I "tossed it" a little too hard. I've had two of these, and on each one the plastic grinder which holds the beans becomes, after a few months, stuck on the motor spindle. Not just stuck, but permanently adhered. Pliers worked for a few weeks, and then they would not even work to get the grinder off for cleaning. A new plastic part was duly purchased, and installed. This worked well for exactly two pots, until the second bean holder became irremovable stuck on the spindle. If you buy one, good luck, but we will not by another Cuisinart coffee maker!
With its sleek Italian styling, brushed stainless finish and "loaded" feature package, you'd expect nothing less than a fabulous cup of coffee. And you won't be disappointed! From filtering the water, to grinding the beans, to keeping your brew hot, not to mention having it ready and waiting for you first thing in the morning, this handsome machine does it all, and then some.
When the aroma of freshly brewed coffee--from freshly ground beans--wafts into your bedroom in the morning, you won't need your alarm clock. Preset this coffeemaker for your desired wake-up time, add coffee beans to the grinder, and in the morning the beans are ground to a medium grind and hot coffee awaits in the 10-cup stainless steel, double-wall insulated thermal carafe. You can also program the machine to start brewing at the end of a dinner party to avoid having to get up from the table, or to have hot coffee waiting after a brisk winter walk. When making fewer than five cups of coffee, use the 1-to-4-cups setting to improve extraction and heat; coffeemakers without this setting often lack the time to heat up properly, and coffee comes out cooler. A disposable charcoal filter removes chlorine and odors from tap water, improving coffee flavor, and should be changed every few months. Other features include a gold-tone commercial-style filter (or use No. 4 basket-style paper filters); capacity to use preground coffee instead of beans; 30-second Brew Pause, which allows a cup be poured before brewing is complete; and an audible tone to indicate the pot is ready. The grinder removes for easy cleaning, and all removable parts can be washed safely in the upper rack of a dishwasher. The Cuisinart Grind and Brew measures 15 by 8 by 7-1/2 inches, and comes with a three-year warranty. --Ann Bieri
