Barbecue (alt.food.barbecue) Discuss barbecue and grilling--southern style "low and slow" smoking of ribs, shoulders and briskets, as well as direct heat grilling of everything from burgers to salmon to vegetables.

Default Places to get smoking wood for free?

Hi all,

Does anyone have any tips for where to scavenge hardwoods/fruitwoods
for smoking?

Fruit orchards at trimming time, stop with a cold six pack of soda when they
are trimming trees for the utility lines, cabinet shops are a good source of
oak, cherry, maple, just be sure to get out any pine, poplar etc. Any
woodworker hobbyist can offer you the same. Your neighbor's pile of
firewood is good too. Either pick it up when he is out for the night or
take over some ribs for him to try. Take a walk through the park on a windy
day or after a storm and drag out a few branches.

Down my neck of the woods, there are big piles of oak all over the
place after hurricanes. I like the idea of schmoozing with orchard
workers. Brush up on your Espanol and you'll be one your way!

If you find a place, let me know! I'm up in Burlington.
