Default Question about beef ribs

Years and years ago one of the chains, I'm thinking Sizzler had a big
"Them bones, them bones them, beef/rib bones!" promotion. It was an
all you can eat beef rib deal. This was over 20 years ago.

The main problems were that they tried to force the sides on you so
you wouldn't eat too much of the "all you can eat" ribs. This was OK
because we just kept turning down the sides (they also cost extra).
We were there for the RIBS!

The other (main) problem was that they started you out with only 3
ribs. You had to finish those before they would bring you more. Then
they made you wait, I shit you not, at LEAST 20 min. after you
finished a batch before they would bring you more. They were betting
your stomach would settle and you wouldn't want any more. They got us
wrong. But I gotta say, it really ****ed me off. Lat time we ever went
there.

Without getting into the entire experience, let me get to the point.

Not only were these ribs very good, and tender, (pressure cooked I
found out), they were the BIGGEST, MEATIEST beef ribs I have ever
seen.

What were these things? I have never seen beef ribs like this before
or since.

Even my father (great cook, horrible BBQ) thought they must have come
from a mutant cow.

Is this a type of rib or cow I never heard of?

Were they from an OX, and they were maybe calling them beef because,
well, an OX is BEEF. I doubt it because you never see Ox anymore.
Maybe because Sizzler cooked them all!

Yes I know, Ox Tail is really cow tail.

Anyone know? I want to get these things and try cuing them.

Thanks!

Gene

My wife & sister-in-law occasionally make a dish w/ Ox Tail, which
is OK, but I find the Ox Tail to be (at least to me) VERY rich and
doesn't really remind me of beef for the most part. Obviously I've
never tried smoking them so I've got no idea how they would be in
that case..

Maybe the ribs you ate at Sizzler came from Babe the Big Blue Ox
(see http://www.treesofmystery.net/ for a nice example)?

Bill Johnson's Big Apple restaurants in the Phoenix area has a great all
you can eat Beef Rib. It's on the menu every night for about $13 last I
remember. These are great tasting oven baked bones with plenty of meat.
I like em nekid with sauce on the side because they're easier to handle.

Service is great, waitresses will bring you as many as you want.
