Default Apple Brown Betty

Apple Brown Betty
1 cup dry unseasoned bread crumbs
1/4 cup white sugar
1/3 cup melted butter
5 cups peeled and sliced apples (5 to 6 medium-
sized apples)
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
Zest and juice of 1 lemon
1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Preheat the oven to 350F. Lightly butter a 1 1/2-quart dish. Combine
the bread crumbs with the white sugar and butter. Pat half of the
mixture in the bottom of the baking dish. Combine the apples, brown
sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice and zest, and walnuts. Spread over
the crumbs. Top with the remaining crumbs. Cover and bake for 40
minutes. Then remove the cover, increase the heat to 400F, and continue
to bake for 10 more minutes. Serve warm with cream, whipped cream, or
ice cream.
