Maybe it does, depending on how much you eat/drink.. To be
honest, I've only smelled it twice from the same place. But smell
being one of the most potent memory retrieving sense, it reminds
me of stink.

Well Dan, it is about the concentration of these extremely
disagreeable smelling chemicals present.
What you smell at the market stall selling those thorny fruits is an
exudation of flavor chemicals in higher concentration…almost in the
same level you smell from the well used baby diaper (or fecal matter
to othersdepending upon the sensitivity or their noses). That is in the
vicinity of 10 parts per million in the actual presence of the
durian fruit or dirty diapers. Too little isn't it? But significant
to offend your sensibilities.
And in its raw state where other components in the durian fruit
enhances it.
And remember at what concentration does the flavor description change
from offensive to agreeable; about 1-3 decimal places. That is a
fraction of the original concentration. That is the simplest
explanation.

I would say its unfair to level the durian as fecal smelling fruit if
you learn to understand and appreciate its characteristics from a
technical point of view...
To the unitiated and the ignorant it really smell crap to them...
I will subscribe to the saying of the Davao people( in Southern
Philippines where this fruit is plentiful) about Durian....
'The fruit that smells like hell... but taste like heaven....
A fitting accolade to this fruit.

No Roy, why does the Durian shake smell like crap? I would assume
the used a diluted concentration to make the drink, or it would be
offensive to most anyone. Correct?

Mine was a joke post! I don't think Durian smells like caca.

Interesting. In the north, in Bikol, we don't have Durian. I do like it,
but I haven't had it much fresh. I didn't like the frozen kind I bought
here in the States once. Guess I'll have to wait til I get back to SE Asia
again, whenever that will be...

Well if you really have a strong dislike for the fruit no amount of
explanation can help in changing your perspective about durian.
Even many people do not like durian raw or cooked.....
Therefore I am lucky then that I was able to appreciate its unque
flavours.
I had tried to puree the raw fruit pulp once to make into a durian
juice and add some water and sugar;indeed in its raw state you can
still smelll the distinc raw smell.
..But if I boil it in syrupy water to cook, the chemical reaction9 in
the caramelization process) that ensues modifies the taste becoming
more apprecciable and the flavor is best if you blend it some
pasion fruit juice or even other juices such as mango and orange
..For variation I can spike it with grand marnier or even just good
brandy...
Oh its heavenly.....Me and My lady love it.....Wanna try some?
