On Wednesday, May 30, La Plaza Cultural Community Garden is honored
to
host five men (and their hand-carved canoes) who authentically
reenacted a portion of Lewis and Clarke's historic expedition across
America.

Dressed in period explorer costumes, members of Sgt. Ordway's 1st
Squad
(Lewis and Clarke's original scout team) will entertain with lively
tales of their journey made on horseback and paddling two giant,
hand-carved canoes.

Accompanied by an outdoor slideshow, they will describe riding
hundreds of miles through Montana; paddling the
Clearwater, Snake, Yellowstone, Columbia and Missouri rivers; and the
valuable relationships they forged with Native American peoples along
the way.

They will also exhibit their giant canoes: Mato Chante (Heart of the
Bear), hand-carved from a 27-foot ponderosa pine, and Flying Eagle
(Wambli River Dancer), hand-carved from a 25-foot western red cedar.

A highlight of the evening will be a salmon feast, featuring wild
salmon caught by Native elders in the Pacific Northwest, in gratitude
for Sgt. Ordway and the 1st Squad's efforts to commemorate the
history
of Lewis and Clarkes expedition. (Salmon is being Fed-Exed here for
the occasion and grilled in the garden in the traditional native
style.
Served with wild rice and locally grown vegetables.)

Proceeds from the $20 per-plate dinner will raise gas money to bring
the canoes home to Oregon and help support La Plaza Cultural.

The dinner and presentation runs from 5 to 9 pm. (Presentation is
free.)

On Thursday, May 31, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 pm. Sgt Ordway and his
crew
will exhibit their canoes to school children and give free talks
about
the history of the Lewis & Clarke expedition and its relevance today.

Were bringing first-hand experiences and stories about the greatest
expedition that Americans ever took on, says Sgt. Willow of Oregon.
We did day to day what Lewis and Clarke did according to their
journals. We dug out canoes on both the east and west sides of the
Rocky Mountains. We also met and learned from Native peoples, just
like
they did 200 years ago.

Theres no other story of America that is as grand as the story of
Lewis and Clarke, adds Sgt. Willow.
