If you ate it in a chinese restaurant, it probably came from a chinese
bakery, so it was definitely different from regular Boston Cream Pie.
The cake itself had a different texture (smooth and light - like
eating air) and not as sweet as usual; and the filling was probably a
cream filling (not american style... more like lightly sweetened
whipped cream).

Personally, I prefer chinese bakery cakes but many americans don't.
When I'm in a decadent mood, I'll buy a whipped cream filled chocolate
jelly roll cake from the local chinese bakery.
