Can anyone out there tell me if this is ok to do. Can a person rack and
then filter/bottle right afterwards? The reason I ask is I have a cabernet sauvignon that was made last October it is completely clear but has some sediment on the bottom of the carboy. I thought instead of racking and topping up, I could eliminate the need to top up by going right to the filter/bottle stage. What is everyone's thoughts on this process? Thanks Jeff |

Sure, but what's the hurry? That Cab could stand an extra racking and a few months more bulk aging. You might not even have to bother with filtering it then. Tom S |

What do you expect to settle out if you have filtered it? I kind of take the opposite approach. Filtering I think is kind of rough on a wine. I always filter into a carboy containing a fresh dose of sulfite and then bottle it right away. I figure if it is going to have bottle shock anyway, why not just bottle it after I have "filter shocked" it. -- Greg Cook http://homepage.mac.com/gregcook/Wine (remove spamblocker from my email) |
