Last night provided an opportunity to taste a couple of wines that
I've had on the shelf, but not for anywhere near long enough--typically immature, I've never dealt well with the concept of delayed gratification. The two provided a contrast in styles: First was a Ch. Lascombes (Margaux) '01. Dark brownish color and a nose of leather, chocolate and black cherries. Taste was a carrythrough of the aromas, with nice cocoa notes and a rich black fruit finish. Enjoyable wine and one of the sort that brings me back to Bordeaux when I can afford the tariff. Second was Justin Isoceles '02. Similar color and slight murkiness (unfined) appearance. Very warm and full aromas of butterscotch, chocolate (milk choc rather than semi-sweet), and black plums, cherries and cassis. Huge mouth feel with lots of warmth. Dark fruits and vanilla with just a tinge of spice. Both wines were about $44 US, but clearly different in style--the Lascombes all about subtlety and nuance, the Justin bold and in-your-face. Wish I had a case more of each. Ed Rasimus Fighter Pilot (USAF-Ret) "When Thunder Rolled" www.thunderchief.org www.thundertales.blogspot.com |
