The wine is Gewurztraminer Vendange Tardive Selection de Grains Nobles
Fut 67, 1976, Hugel. The wine has been properly stored since shortly after release. There were different releases with different Fut numbers. Broadbent claims that Fut 20 was the greatest cask, and it was 135 degrees Oechsle, 13.7% alcohol, 53 g/L residual sugar, and made from 100% botrytis-affected grapes. I have not found any details for Fut 67 that I had, but it could not be far behind on comparison of my notes with those of Broadbent. The wine still is very fresh, and one might guess it to be 20 years younger in a blind tasting. The color is very bright lemon with no trace of orange or brown. It has extreme richness with pinealple, figs, and mixed floral notes. There is enough acid to balance the great honey-like sweetness. It is creamy and coats the mouth. It is about of German BA level in taste, but has higher alcohol more like in a Sauternes. However the great richness hides the alcohol so well that you hardly notice it. Fortunately I have a few more bottles, and they could well outlast me. |
