Default Grüner Veltliner

Austrian wines have never made it to New Zealand - thus I must confess to
not have read up on the many recommendation posted on afw by Dale or Emily
or Michael P.

However, later this week, Lord and Lady St.Helier are journeying north to
spend a couple of weeks in France (and catching up with Ian and Jacquie
Hoare and Michael Tommasi)

Unfortunately, we are simply unable to extend the scope of our holiday
beyond Provence, the Correze and Paris; (sorry Herr Pronay - we would love
to get to Austria - and will do so - but not this time!!!) - but we will
be spending a few days in London (I must catch up with a few of my
gin-swilling mates at the House of Lords again!) - so, it is my intention to
seek and purchase a couple of bottle of quality Grüner Veltliner whilst in
London.

OK - I am aware that "Smaragd" is a designation of quality and that Wachau,
Kamptal and Kremstal are the best regions - but can anyone give me any other
hints which I should look for in my search for a quality wine, which I can
use to totally stump my friends on New Years Eve - when we traditionally
play Wine Options"

As to what may be available in the UK is anyone's guess, but if anyone can
give me a couple of hints, I would be grateful.

Could anybody of the UK contingent could find a retailer's
Austrian wine list on the web? Or have it mailed to me? It would
be much easier for me to tell half a dozen wines out of a given
choice than to name the usual suspects. I have TNs of probably
over 80% of the best Grüner Veltliner produced here, it would be
easy for me to dig into my notes.

I did a quick search and have found that the wines from one of my
favorite vintners from the Wachau region, Johann Donabaum, are
available in the UK at a joint called Nick Dobson Wines.

I import these wines for the US market, but you'll find TN's and other
positive comments about the winery & wines here on afw from Michael P.,
Dale W. & Mark L.

You can read more about Johann on our site:

Have a wonderful trip! If you get a chance, enjoy a glass of something
at the cafe in the town of Lacoste-
Cheers!

Excellent, Michael

Thanks a million.

I just learned from Thomas Klinger, Willi Bründlmayer's
sales & export manager:

WineMatters Limited
8 Poplar Street
Christchurch

Only about 1,000km away from me - but I will contact them on my return to
see what they have to offer.

As to your most comprehensive UK list, I am sure that I will find a fine
example.

Again, thanks
