Hello;
Yesterday, we had an AAB (appel a boire) centered on Spanish wines and a tapa style supper. Apart from two cavas, both rather bland, all the guests had decided on reds - two RIojas, one Ribera del Duero, and one from Priorat. The last one stood out from the others, to my mind more like a SOuthern French than your "generic Spanish". And here comes the "ampelographic" question. According to the label, the varietals used were Garnatxa tinta, Cab Sauv, and Carinyena. Would the Garnatxa be the same as Grenache? And the Carinyena Carignan? TIA, and cheers Nils Gustaf -- Respond to nils dot lindgren at drchips dot se |

Yes, and it is tinta just as in french it is called Grenache noir, to distinguish it from the "gris" and the wonderful aromatic white grenache. And the Carinyena Carignan? Yessir Can you identify the wine now please ;-) Cheers to you Nils, and of course to Xina, a Merry Nordic Xmas. Mike from rainy Provence |

Yes, and it is tinta just as in french it is called Grenache noir, to distinguish it from the "gris" and the wonderful aromatic white grenache. We tasted a few whites made from grenache blanc at that Languedoc-Roousillon tasting a reported on in August. We will have Languedoc as a theme on our Xmas luncheon; after the first course (which is beer and snaps oriented), we do a Bouboulenque (sp?) called Brise Marine, then two different reds for the ham and the cheese, and finish with a banyuls with the riz a lŽamande, with cherry preserve. And the Carinyena Carignan? Yessir Can you identify the wine now please ;-) Gladly, esteemed sir, forasmuch as I can. It hight "Scipion Priorat" 1999, according to the label "elaborado y embotellado por De Muller SA". Being now informed that my suspicions were correct, I would say that the nose was dominated by grenache, but with a slight green-ness I ascribe to the cabriolet sauvignon (sorry about that), being of the opinion that the grapes, on harvest, were not super-ripe. HAving previously put my foot in it by discussing the lack of loong-evity of a Dom Vieux Telegraphe, I think IŽll keep my big mouth shut concerning this wineŽs hopes for a brighter future - we did conclude that in all likelyhood it was going to evolve. I have no experience of the Priorats at all - this is the second I taste. Cheers to you Nils, and of course to Xina, a Merry Nordic Xmas. ANd the same to you and Cathy. Not a very Nordic Xmas so far - 7-8 C and gray skies, possibly weŽre in for more rain. Nils GUstaf -- Respond to nils dot lindgren at drchips dot se |
