I'm hosting a chess tournament with friends, and would like to buy a
bottle of wine for about $20 or less which has a name that's related to the game of chess. The purchase is not, of course, so much about ending up with a marvelous bottle of wine, as it is to find a gift with a name related to chess. So something with the words like Queen, King, Castle, or Knight would all be suitable. Any recommendations? Once I have some names, I may inquire at my local retailer. Thanks in advance. |

King Estate is an Oregon winery that makes both Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. Their wines are reasonably priced and quite decent for their price point. Another good, inexpensive winery is Castle Rock, which makes various low cost reds of decent quality (Pinot Noir and Merlot especially). Beringer also makes a line of wines from the Knight's Valley of Napa. Both their Cab Sauvignon and Alluvium (white) from the Knight's Valley typically retail for under $20. HTH Mark Lipton -- alt.food.wine FAQ: http://winefaq.hostexcellence.com Good job, Mark. There's a Paso Robles winery called Bishop's Peak, too. |

Kumkani makes a nice variety of inexpensive South African wines, all of which have a chess King on the label: http://www.southernwines.com/kumkani...ine-online.cfm pavane |

There's a Paso Robles winery called Bishop's Peak, too.- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - We represent Bishop's Peak in Ohio and Kentucky and it's pretty decent wine for the price. Bishop's Peak is made by Talley Vineyards and I prefer the "Rock Solid Red" which is primarily a blend of Cab and Syrah and it sells for about $10. |

Interesting idea! My initial thought was that drinking wine while playing chess might not lead to the greatest games! Come to think of it, the only Grand Slam doubled, redoubled that I ever made in Bridge was during a well-lubricated night! Perhaps the defense was a bit better lubricated than you were, Jim? ;-) Or perhaps the alcohol lowered your inhibitions just enough to take that finesse despite "eight ever, nine never"?
