Let my introduce myself as a lover of fine wines. This past week I
spent some time touring the beautiful Dundee area of Oregon and found
some lovely wines.

Has anyone here in your group had any experience with Bergstrom Pinot
Noir. This is a new find for me. These are some of the most complex
Pinots I have ever had from Oregon.

If anyone here has experience with them I would love to know your
thoughts. Being a lover of fine French Burgundy I was amazed how
different these Oregon Pinot's are compared to the California style
which I found to be Cabernet built Pinot. Oregon style seems
different. Bergstrom was outstanding.

Since I had never heard of Bergstrom but it was suggested at the Ponzi
Wine and Bar I am interested in others opinions if others have tried.

I appreciate any feedback on this wine.

Thanks for writing in. Bergstrom is a fairly recent intro to the scene.
I believe they started planting in '98 or '99. Like many wineries in
the Dundee hills area, the rich, red soil produces some incredibly
complex wines. Pinot Noir tends to reflect the qualities of the earth
more than other varietals, and the mineral soil in which Bergstrom
planted their vines helped bring out that rich character in their
wines. I've had several of their Pinots - I believe 2002 and 2003 - and
been quite impressed.

Now.. these complex Pinots are almost a bit of a paradox -- so rich are
some of the wines coming out of Dundee and neighboring Chehalem, that
they contradict the "feminine" qualities you'd expect to find in a more
"traditional" French or Californian Pinot. Still... it makes for a very
rewarding experience, and I wouldn't trade them for anything.

Which of their wines did you try? Have you tried pairing them with a
particular dish?

Willakenzie is another winery we visited and really liked when we were
recently in Oregon. A little out of the way but a beautiful setting. Nice,
very friendly people at the tasting area and we loved their wines.

My experience with pinot noir is limited so I'm interested in how
Willakenzie's style compares to burgundy and other Oregon producers.
