Default candy making

Long Story short...

Last night my 81 year old Dad who beat rectal cancer last year and has
Parkinson's fell and broke his hip. My sister talked to him this morning
and he is grumpy but still has his sense of humor.
He complained that the Hospital doesn't serve Martinis. I thought I'd go on
the internet and order a pound of the Martini flavor hard candy we used to
buy in the late 70's (we got it at Swiss Colony) Well, it doesn't exist
anymore. (side note, when doing a keyword search "hard candy" make sure your
kids are not in the room. sheesh!)

So, I thought I'd just find a Martini flavor extract and make hard candy.
No! not even gin and vermouth flavors.
So here is my thought. Take a standard Hard Candy recipe and use gin and
vermouth in place of water then the lemon extract for flavoring (a James
Bond Martini)

Anyone here have candy making experience and words of wisdom before I
proceed?

thanks -nancy-

i'd go to the recipe board at www.vegsource.com and ask chef deb. she
always answers in a speedy fashion, and she seems to have a recipe for
absolutely everything!

Geez Nan, sorry to hear about your dad. Though this isn't a recipe for hard
candy, it seems like it would work with any sort of liquer:

http://cocktails.about.com/library/r...ttobonbons.htm

Excruciatingly hot sugar syrup scares me so I don't do much in the way of hard
candy ;-). I think I'd probably sneak in a thermos or drench a tea bread in
his alcohol of choice...I'd imagine if you were making hard candies, the
alcohol would evaporate off...I'd probably need a drink too if I broke my hip!

I used to make Hard Candy in High School, it is rather easy. I always over
cook the soft and chewy candies. I made caramels once that could remove
impacted wisdom teeth without surgery.
We used to get Martini flavor hard candy from the Swiss Colony but they seem
to no longer have it. I've found other cocktail flavors but not martini.
I found a recipe for Vermouth and can use the spices to make my own extract
and Juniper berries for the Gin but holy smokes that is a bit much. I'll
just find him some nice strong cinnamon drops, he likes those.
Dad had a hip replacement on Wednesday, he insisted that the Docs only
repaired the hip. Mom can't figure why he won't accept that it is a
replacement. I think he feels that he's lossing too many orginal parts. He
wears partial dentures, had a colonectomy last year and now the Hip. So
I've started calling him Darth Dad.

lol...I can never seem to get the sugar past the soft stage...I lost a filling
once to a Jolly Rancher watermelon candy so ever since then I've been leery of
hard candies ;-).

Jolly Ranchers don't melt like most candies they turn gummy. Now or Laters
are a chewy candy that will also pull teeth.
OH! Crud, this talk of dental work and candy reminds me that the Tooth Fairy
was supposed to visit last night.

Gotta Fly! Thanks for the Bionic Dad line, I'll use that.
