Could anyone tell me the literary source for this quote by Dr. Samuel
Johnson? "So hear it then, my Rennie dear, Nor hear it with a frown; You cannot make the tea so fast As I can gulp it down. I therefore pray thee, Rennie dear, That thou wilt give to me with cream and sugar softened well, Another dish of tea." A possible date is 1770 as conjectured by an author William Ukers in "Romance of Tea". Also found in Jane Pettigrew's "A Social History of Tea". Neither author provided source information. Thanks so much google! |
