Default Good, authentic sushi in Chicago (no boats, please)

Hi, I just moved to Chicago from Toronto, and I'm looking for a good,
authentic sushi restaurant (for those who've eaten in Toronto, think on
the level of Sushi Kaji). Does anyone have any recommendations? Price
isn't really an object as long as they have fresh, HQ fish on hand and
the chef is experienced. Having good otoro on hand would also be a
plus!

Cheers.

Darn, that's a pity. It really bugs me when the good places close down
while some really bad places thrive. Anyone else here know a place that
might come second to Hatsuhana? C'mon, there've got to be a few good
places in a city this big!

Hi, I lived in Chicago all my life, but have moved to the Southwest 2
years ago.

As far as I know, Itto Sushi was still open last I can recall.

Two of my favorite Sushi restaurants in Chicago, were thr Sai Cafe on
Broadway (very good, probably the best in the city, and thier fish,
particularly White Tuna-Yellowtail Tuna is absolutely outstanding!)

The other place I frequented mostly for the last 18 years, was Shiroi
Hana on North Clark St. between Belmont, and Addison Streets in the
Wrigleyville Area.

They have specials, and are very reasonable with both Lunches, and
Dinners, thier Sushi is very good, and always fresh, even through the
Sushi Preparers at the Sushi Bar are now mostly non-Asian (Latino I
believe)

They do a hell of a great job, regardless of being non-asian, are all
business, and are obsessively neat, and dedicated to what they do. They
all work together there, like a well oiled machine.

Still, there are some Asian men, and women in back preparing the more
complex dishes, it is a very nice, neat, very clean place, preppy place,
and service is outstanding. The Sushi has always been good, and I've
never been disappointed. (Sure wish I had a place like that here in
southern NM. Sushi in these parts is virtually inedible, though I did
go to an excellent Japanese Eatery in Santa Fe NM a few months ago
called Osaka)

At Shiroi Hana, one can get a combo dinner like a Tempura Plate, that
comes with two Maki Rolls, 7 pieces of sushi (Of your choice), and a
Tempura Dish with 2 large pefectly deep fried Tempura Shrimp, and
assorted tempura veggies, like string beans, sweet potato, zucchini, and
a delectable dipping sauce to go with, for about $12.50-$13.50, which
IMO is quite reasonable.
(A very good Miso Soup is included free with all Dinners/Sushi Orders)

They serve Beer, and Sake, just like Sai Cafe does.

Shiroi Hana usually closes about 2pm in the afternoon, and then re-opens
at 4pm I believe for dinner. Hope this helps, Enjoy! Mark

Hi Sys,
I'm in Alamogordo, New Mexico, which is 85 miles north of El Paso Texas.
Alamogordo, has the worst, most miserable restaurants in the USA.
That's no bull. (And not that cheap either) When half the town eats at
Taco Bell for lunch, what does that tell you?!

When you start telling yourself that KFC, and Golden Corral are good,
it's time for a reality check indeed! :-) Mark

If one ever gets to Sante Fe NM, I highly recommend Osaka Restaurant for
thier Sushi.

They rivaled the very best Sushi joints I've ever been in, in Chicago.
Their sushi was absolutely heavenly, and perfectly prepared. The Maguro,
Hamachi, and Unagi were perfect. So was their Makis, and Hand Rolls.

Not all that Cheap, as I spent about $37.00, and easily could've eaten
another $20-$25 in Sushi.

Of course though, I had a Large 21oz Sapporo Beer to go with, and this
Beer has always been one of my favs.

Kirin, and Asahi have really turned to crap, since they no longer import
this beer from Japan, but make it either here in US, or the Asahi, in
Canada. To me, all Canadian Beer is like drinking ****. It all tastes
the same.

They did the same to Fosters Beer too, which also used to be an
excellent Beer, until Canada started making it. Mark
