D. Lutjen:
Sounds like you've been there, Walter. I used to live right up the street (Azabu mamiana, next to the then-Soviet embassy - safe place to live g) and wander up there a couple of times a week after dinner for a couple of tai-yaki. Wonderful. David, did you ever make it out to Cucina Hirata in Azabu Juban? I haven't been there in a few years, but they serve the most incredible Italian food imaginable, at prices that are equally mind-blowing. Back in the bubble-days, I remember having to pay close to $30 for a few stalks of asparagus baked with parmesan. Still, the food was so good that it was *almost* worth it. There is another great restaurant close to Rainbow Roll Sushi called Nanao. This restaurant serves country-style cuisine as a succession of small dishes, kind of an informal kaiseki I suppose. Everything is super fresh and prepared simply. The chef/owner is a woman who appeared on the Iron Chef program several years ago. glenn |
