Hi Folks: I'll be in Buffalo for 4 days in Feb., and am planning to be wined and dined to the max, to make up for freezing my tail off! Any suggestions for good sushi in that area? Thanks. Jack First - bundle up! It's been quite cold up here, as you can imagine.... (First, one link I found: http://sushiref.com/listings/na/usa/ny/buffalo/ Here's a short list of places I can suggest: Kuni's Sushi Bar 752 Elmwood Ave, Buffalo NY (716) 881-6819 (IIRC, very small, very GOOD, get there early, right at opening and you can sit up by the Chef's counter - call for hrs) Osaka Sushi Bar and Grille 3112 Main Street Buffalo, NY 14214 716.831.0443 (Also nice! More SitDown type feel, but still VERY nice!) Still need help getting around, feel free to drop me a note and I'll see what info I can get you. -- Shujin Tribble Responding to NG appreciated or take off my SHOEs to respond direct |

Hi ShujinTribble:
I'll battle the cold if they'll feed me sushi!! And sake! Yes, I have heard plenty of Kuni's. Was also told that it is very exclusive and small, so possibly may have to wait quite a while? What are your personal recommendations? I'm going to be with a bunch of MD's and they're picking up the tab, so I'm gonna live it up!! Thanks for the input. Jack. I'm going to be with a bunch of MD's and they're picking up the tab, so I'm gonna live it up!! Thanks for the input. Jack. (Chuckle) fair enough... First off, bring layers to wear - the temps and wind chills are a little on the nasty side right now (anywhere from +30 F to -20 F depending on the day). If you have an overcoat and a denim jacket to wear under it (or something similar in cold-blocking weight), you should be good... and gloves and a scarf! (Laugh now, but you'll thank me when you get back to... Where you from again? SMIRK!) Seriously, Kuni's IS small... I mean REALLY small... you can turn in a circle with your arms out and tap 1/2 the people in the place if you aren't careful. Its worth it to get there at opening, just to get a table / stool. Osakas is bigger - LOOKS more like a restaurant than Kuni's... So you won't have to wait long - unless the place is REALLY hoppin'. As to quality... it was good there. Had a great time! If you want the kitschy (sp?) version, you can always request going to Shogun - Transit Rd / NY-78 across from Eastern Hills Mall. Been there a couple times, but not for sushi yet. Seriously, I wish you well... and if by ANY stretch you'll be visiting Roswell Park Cancer Institute... Tell them they do GREAT work - I thank them on behalf of my wife! (And if you're around on a monday night, I'm part of a college radio show from 10pm - midnight - 91.3fm / WBNY. Give a call!) -- Shujin Tribble Reply to group preferred Remove my SHOEs to reply direct |

We'll be flying in from Texas ... we're still kinda warm here for winter, so
this NY winter is going to be a shocker, but I think it'll be an experience (... which I'll probably not forget for quite a while!!) We'll be visiting several hospitals; Millard Fillmore (and all their associates) and Buffalo General, unfortunately, not Roswell Park, but I'll pass the word along. Our hotel is the Marriott at Amherst. Is this anywhere close to any of the places you all mentioned? I don't care to drive much if the weather is going to be bad. I'll probably try to hit Kuni's one evening, and then reserve the rest for something less exclusive since we do have some people who have never tried sushi before. We'll be arriving on a tuesday, so won't be able to catch your show ... sorry. Thanks for your input. Jack. "ShujinTribble" wrote in message ... where you from again? SMIRK!) Amherst, eh? ok... things'll be a little out-of-the-way for you (meaning Kuni's and Osakas), but worth the trip. Don;t forget, we deal with the snow every year... somtimes for 9 months at a clip. (Kidding) It'll be cold, but the roads'll be pretty dry (they are by me, and I live out in the area known as "ski-country"). As for the hospitals, Millard Fillmore Suburban is where my daughter was born - nice crew. While you're there I would suggest you see about going to Wegmans (grocery store) at Sherridan Drive and Essjay (Basically go out to the traffic light and turn left). If you go in during the day (lunch!) in the food entrance (on the right) they have a sushi kiosk where they make it right in front of you and sell it. These guys are GOOD at what they do! Hope the trip goes well, and you have a great reality story to tell the folks back home... For instance, buffalo winters aren't as bad as everyone thinks - they're worse, but DAMN! can they dig out when it hits!
