Default Sushi in Sydney

Hey folks,
I'm planning my honeymoon in Sydney for next year. Though I've had some
great sushi in the states (Hatsuhanna, Taka Sushi, Sushi Nami) I have been
told that Asian food in Australia is amazing.

Does anyone have a reccomendation for a top notch place in Syd? I'd prefer a
place where we don't have to order off of a menu; IE somewhere where we can
let the chef do his magic.

Thanks!

Nick,

Although the cuisine is a fusion rather than traditional Japanese, you must
try Tetsuya's. There is no menu and the many courses of food served are
tremendous both in quality and presentation. The down side is that it is
very expensive and difficult to get into without reservations well ahead of
time. We were able to get in for lunch and it was well worth the
experience.

Well, the place of the moment would probably be Tetsuya's, although it's
neither sushi nor strictly Japanese and more "fusion" but in the best sense
of the word. Tetsuya Wakada does some pretty amazing things - I'd suggest
one of the degustation menu's of about 9 or 10 little courses. You're
looking at about $180AUD per person and a fair wait for a free table (you
will almost certainly need to book a few weeks in advance).

Try browsing through http://sydney.citysearch.com.au for some ideas - the
restaurant guide is quite good. Failing that, if you can get hold of the
magazine "Gourmet Traveller", which is a Conde Nast publication, it usually
has excellent reviews and information for restraurants within Australia as
well as internationally.

On the other hand, if you need a guide to cheap eats around Sydney, I can
generally steer you in the right direction

Enjoy!

Nick,

I just wanted to add something since you haven't gotten much feedback.
Although the restaurant that has been suggested (Tetsuya's) best fits your
requirements of top-notch and food that is not ordered off the menu, there
is a great source for sushi that is a little bit different. In the Sydney
Fish Market, there is a small sushi restaurant that is not fancy but has
delicious and fresh sushi. There was also a sushi restaurant at the top of
the ANA Hotel. Great views but the sushi quality did not match the prices
IMO. I was there in Feb. of 2002 so take into account that things may have
changed since then.

Thanks for all the input folks!
I made reservations at Tetsuyas and am quite excited.
This doesn't appear to be a traditional sushi place, but looks amazing
nonetheless. Its also a Relais et Chateaux so how bad could it be?

Thanks again!

Great place for a honey moon. The plane ride will be brutal.
