I'm hungry. Why is my local sushi place closed on Mondays?

It is a characteristic of many Japanese restaurants in the US to be closed
on Mondays. Perhaps it is the economy, but I have recently noticed a trend
where some Restaurants that used to be closed on Mondays are now open. Much
to my delight.

This is true.. or, they're open for dinner but not for lunch.

Quite a few restaurants are closed on Mondays.. not just sushi/Japanese
restaurants.

I had always understood that it was a matter of delivery of fresh fish. The
suspicion is that Monday's sushi is made from Friday's fish. The chef has to
have a day off and Monday sounds like a suitable day!

I wonder why that would close down so many other restaurants. Monday
nights are frequently dark at non-chain restaurants.

I've found that Japanese restaurants take every opportunity to get some
time off. Sunday (all day) is impossible to find sushi, with few
exceptions and Monday is the same. This from an Orange County, CA in
which there are many Japanese restaurants.

I find some even close for almost any kind of bank or legal holiday!

Come on up to Kingston, Ontario. (Ontario, Canada... not Ontario County)
Ta-Ke Sushi opens at 11:30 Sundays, and their food is nothing short of
spectacular.

A local sushi bar used to be closed on Sunday when it was just the
one sushi chef. Now that he has a second, he is out on Mondays.

Mondays (and Tuesdays/Wednesdays) are typically very slow.

There's one or two down here. Among maybe 70+. But they aren't the
best ones...

This spectacular place--it's open 7 days a week?

It is a characteristic of many Japanese restaurants in the US to be completely bad.

Not if they're Japanese owned and operated. Why?
