Default Sushi in NYC

This is a bit of a newbie post... I orignally posed this in rec.food.cooking
and they directed me here.

Hey folks,
I am planning a last minute trip to NYC this weekend and looking for some
good sushi. I really want to try Nobu but I am fairly sure I won't be able
to get in this late (there are three of us). We want something truly
amazing; I live in Virginia and we don't exactly have a blustering sushi
scene.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.
I am staying near Times Square.

p.s. other places I love:
Taka Sushi - Aspen, CO Simply the best I've ever had. There really aren't
words to describe the freshness, creativity and taste. This place is small
and there are some American chefs, but mostly Japanese. The Americans are
well trained, but they don't compare to the skills of the real deal.

Sushi Nami - Alpharetta, GA Not as posh or as good as Taka, but never the
less, "Scott" (he's Japanese) is quite skilled.

My vote goes for Hatsuhana on 17 E. 48th St. Check out their new site
at http://www.hatsuhana.com. Funky music Damn! They opened one in
Honolulu. Walter will have to check this one out for us.

Check out the menus section. They have special items flown in from

Japan.

I guess it depends on when you get there. One time I happened to be
in the city after a baseball game and got there, I dunno, like
4pm-ish. I got a seat at the sushi bar without a reservation. But
there was only one of me.

Yes it was good. But, in terms of value for money, there are better
places out there.

Enjoy! Be sure to ask what they have special, from Japan or
California. The California uni was fantastic when we were
lats there..

I've had pretty good experiences there myself. I got a spider roll as
temaki with asparagus. Very enjoyable.

Hatsuhana 48th st.

Upstairs bar

Osada San or Seki San as chefs. Tip well or I will hunt you down. I'll be
there Monday night next week and Thursday for lunch.
