Is their sushi any good? Their TV ads always feature knives and grill.

They are the mainstream of Japanese cuisine, as I've been told.
Never been, not really interested in trying..

I've been there a few times. They aren't a sushi place, they are
teppanyaki. They grill up meats and shrimp and stuff, with a lot of
zazz and whittling floor show. You can undoubtedly get a few sushi
items, probably not much more than some stock rolls.

I doubt they even have an actual sushi plate with maguro, tuna, shrimp,
hamachi and such. If they go the extra mile and produce even this, I
wouldn't walk across the street to get it. It's a hip version of surf
and turf.

We're lucky enough to have a teppenyaki and sushi place near us that has
excellent sushi. We almost never do the teppenyaki when we go, unless its
with large groups that want that.

I use to go to one place in Laguna Hills that had an excellent sushi
bar, as well as teppanyaki tables.

Just to clarify--I don't think Bennihana has a sushi bar. Best to call
to find out thought.

I've been to benihana and in some cases they do have sushi. It has
never been better than whole foods supermarket sushi in my opinion.
It has been better than some of the non-Japanese sushi bars that don't
understand how to make sushi rice. On a scale of 1-10 with 10 the
highest, it comes in at a 3 or 4 for me.

I admit that in some communities, it is likely to be the best sushi
you can get. If you lived in NYC or L.A., you wouldn't consider it.

I've never even seen a Bennihana's in the Jacksonville Fla area. There
may be one or more.

There is a place in nearby St. Augustine that has Teppenyaki and an
awesome sushi bar. I've discussed it here before.

Yamato Japanese Steakhouse
601 Tingle Ct
St Augustine, FL 32086
(904) 819-0202

The sushi is prepared and served by very professional chefs and the
place has a nice atmosphere. The clicking and clacking of the
teppenyaki is a little distracting, but the sushi is worth it.
