Trader Joe's sushi is terrible, even the CA rolls. The rice is very sweet.
On the other hand, Giant Eagle, a local supermarket has a sushi bar that
isn't too bad. Has anyone else found half decent sushi at a grocery store?

Ralph's on Victory & Buena Vista in Burbank is tolerable. They have a
Japanese sushi "chef" during the day. I'll buy one (sushi, not chef) every
couple of months, along with a bottle of sake, bring it home and have a
solitary sushifest, as I can't afford to go to my favorite sushiya. ;-(

Whole Foods sushi is not the best but quite edible.

Sure, Trader Joe's in Tustin. When you say "Trader Joe's sushi" it's
kinda like saying "San Diego's sushi". After all, Trader Joe's gets
their sushi from local places. If the manager or the place they get it
is unknowledgeable, or isn't time sensitive, well you know the results.
I say Tustin, only because I got it once in a Trader Joe's in OC and
it was good. Frankly I've forgotten where.

Also sometimes these grocery strore sushi things need to be purchased
between, say, 2 and 5pm or some such.

Long ago I use to get it at an Pavillion's supermarket in Newport Beach
and eat it in the parking lot for lunch and it was damned good. They
are long gone now, though, IIRC.

Once again, I think they buy it from local concerns.

Roche Bros. has fair pre-packaged sushi. Its still not good enough to satisfy
my craving.

Wild Oats on Oracle in Tucson, chef is (I believe) Japanese.

That's true I think but it's the results that matter. I think
the personnel do make it under contract but the result is
satisfactory to buy for lunch. I bought decent sushi in two
recent trials, in Rockville, MD and Mill Valley, CA .

Right. Nothing else matters.

I guess the thing to remember when one visits these places looking for
serviceable sushi is that you are always gambling the first time. If
it's good, remember the label. Thought maybe not at Trader Joe's, I
remember at Wild Oats, Pavillion and Whole Foods that it had the
distributors name clearly printed. Then maybe one can feel more secure
assuming that the distributor is a quality shop. Of course that leads
to the importance of date-stamping the day of packaging.

Hmm. I guess the distributor might be using any number of smaller shops too.

Let's face it, whether you find good sushi or abominable in a grocery
store, this will never be the place to turn for consistency.

The sushi counters at Whole Foods and at the somewhat more
expensive Balducci's have oriental-looking people actually
working there and the sushi on sale appears to be made on site.
I don't think the product is dated stamped but at least they
don't proclaim "made fresh *daily*". I don't know how long they
actually display the packages but the quality was, as I said,
satisfactory both for nigiri and various rolls.

"Publix" grocery stores have sushi that's not bad for a quick fix when
I'm Jonesin for some sushi.

Expencive as hell for what you get though. About $8 for 4 small roll
pieces and 4 sashimi on very sticky rice.

I do that about once every 4 months. I think it takes me that long to
forget exactly what it tasted like the last time...

Spot on. Where I live they get it from a company called Genji Express,
but it is pretty good, actually....

The Whole Foods around Boston also have Genji Express sushi.
I was suprised to see Market Basket now has a small sushi counter.

That's just where I'm going. You can feel okay buying there until one
day you find out it's coming from "Fat Larry's Seafood Mecca". Then
you might want to be careful. That's why I appreciate a label that
means something.
