I'll be flying with some sashimi on Feb 1. In the past, before all the
security regulations, I would pack it in Baggies, between Baggies of ice, wrapped in a down jacket, in my carryon bag. (Burbank, CA to Austin, TX, with a one hour layover in Phoenix, AZ) At my destination, the ice had barely started to melt. Now I'll have to check it. Has anyone done this recently? If so, how, and how did it work out? Thanks. -- Nick. Support severely wounded and disabled Veterans and their families! Thank a Veteran and Support Our Troops. You are not forgotten. Surely there's no rule against having fish in your carry-on luggage, is there? Is it the ice? Why? Security will jump at anything they think is odd, and transporting raw frozen fish in your luggage wrapped with bags of ice would probably be considered odd. I'm sure you're right, but I would have thought that it would just cause them to take a closer look at it, rather than not let it on. But perhaps you're right and they wouldn't let anything odd on.. -- Ken Blake Please reply to the newsgroup |

It might be easier to have it shipped.. though more expensive, maybe worth the price vs the headache of dealing with security. I've posted an e-mail to TSA asking about this. I don't fly 'til 1 Feb, so even the gubmin should be able to answer by then. ;-/ -- Nick. Support severely wounded and disabled Veterans and their families! Thank a Veteran and Support Our Troops. Heh heh. They've let me on. I was wearing full USMC desert camo with combat boots (of course, I took the boots off to be x-rayed). They did look at me funny, though. -- Nick. That's a list of permitted and prohibited items... nothing mentioned about frozen or chilled food at all, one way or another. |

Thanks, Keith. I've been to the TSA website and I know that the raw fish, packed with ice, in my checked baggage, is permitted. My concern is that the gorillas inspecting it re-pack it to maintain the integrity of the insulation. Nothing worse than spending $50 or so on Sashimi grade fish, only to have it arrive warm and smelling like . . . fish! I've e-mailed TSA with my query. If I don't get a reply before 29 Jan, I won't get the fish. We'll just hafta eat Texas BBQ. ;-D -- Nick. Support severely wounded and disabled Veterans and their families! If so, how, and how did it work out? Thanks. There was an article on NPR some time back about a seafood shop that had begun packing items with frozen vegetables instead of ice to avoid any possible security issues. I'm afraid there isn't much to be done if a TSA agent has a suspicion and wants to open up your carry-on. But assuming that the fish isn't out too long I don't see it as a problem. If in the past the ice had just barely begun to melt, then maybe it will be a little more melted when you arrive at your destination. So how did it go? Did you try frozen vegetables? Neither. We ordered frozen sashimi from some guy in San Diegoaround 4:00 PM Pst. It was at the door in Austin at 10:00 Am the next day.
