From the same website (and I think this one's legit):
"Something shaky is about to hit Japanese meal tables - poisonous giant jellyfish! Wobbling its way onto the Japanese cuisine are huge Echizen jellyfish, which have been appearing in massive schools flocking off the Sea of Japan coastline and gorging on more palatable fare, like prized maguro tuna. "Making them a popular food is the best way to solve the problem," Shunjiro Ueno, a professor at the National Fisheries University in Shimonoseki, tells Sunday Mainichi." |

"Making them a popular food is the best way to solve the problem," Shunjiro Ueno, a professor at the National Fisheries University in Shimonoseki, tells Sunday Mainichi." This huge population explosion of giant jellyfish (echizen kurage) has been noticed in Japan for the last 3-4 years. These jellyfish are really huge, easily 3 feet in diameter, and travel in huge groups so that they effectively destroy commercial net fishing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HqfCm58SB6Y http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GwmvN3091kQ As the the reason for this population explosion various theories have been kicked around from water temperature changes connected to global warming, to the increase in pollution from the Yantgze River in China causing an increase in plankton due to heavy industrialization. There is an effort being made to deal with the problem by creating a market demand for these Jellyfish. The stumbling block is that in Japan, Jellyfish is not a usual seafood item, and is rather associated with Chinese cuisine. Anyway, good luck to whoever finds a way to market them. M |

wrote in message ups.com... Musashi - Haven't i seen Japanese salad with jellyfish? - ww You may have. But I assure you, using jellyfish is not "traditional Japanese". Bearing in mind the possibility of some remote regional use that I haven't come accross. If you see a salad using Jellyfish in a Japanese Restaurant, it is a Chinese or Chinese-style dish. Of course any chef can create something new using ingredients traditional to other cusines. M |
