I read this group faithfully, and have tried numerous times to get my
starter going. Consistent failure. I did succeed with sourdough from a
purchased starter in the 1970's. I'd love to start again. Anyone who has a
bit of starter to sell, and takes PayPal, please email me. I would rather
have a liquid starter. I have purchased 2 dried starters and have had no
better luck than with my "homemade". Thanks.

Liquid starters paid via PayPal probably don't exist. Some people here
with send you a dried or moist start for nothing or for postage. A problem with
dry starts from stores or catalogs is that they are not dated and expire on
the shelves. Liquid starters would be messy in the mails, but the KingArthurFlours
folks mail out doughball starters. Preparing starters for mailing is a bit tricky so it
is good to get your start from somebody who knows how to do it. (Not advised
to trust anyone who offers a liquid start, notwithstanding that I once got a quite good
start as a turbid solution in a 2-dram vial.)

Try Carl's Starter. It is a great starter and free for a SASE. There
web site is at http://home.att.net/~carlsfriends/

The problem with a liquid starter is that it would need to be shipped in
a cooler. Half dry, mixed with a lot of flour works. I've moved starters
between continents in that manner.

True, getting a starter going from scratch is more of a challenge than
getting a dried starter to work.

There is always carlsfriends.org for a self-addressed envelope and
possible voluntarily donation.

That's another story.

What makes you think that another starter makes it? Dried starters
normally work and if they don't, the reason could be the starter. With
two bought and self-grown starters failing it may be worth looking at
some other factors, not just the starter.

Cow Whisperer,

Check out the sourdough link on http://www.thefreshloaf.com. There is a
great lesson there on preparing a starter using raisin water.

If that fails, contact me off group for a sample.
