I was finishing up several loaves of SD tonight and had an experience that I
just had to share with the group. I was sitting at the computer trying to get caught up on some work while the last loaf was in the oven (SD with a cinnamon swirl... mmm...). When my timer went off, I delayed for a few minutes longer and then ran up the stairs and threw open the open while starting to grab for the oven mitts. As I threw the oven door down, I had to turn away for a brief moment to shield my face from the heat and then as I turned back towards to oven, I distinctly saw something fly very quickly out of the oven and disappear to my right side. I thought "What the heck was that? There couldn't be any ALIVE in the oven since it had been closed and at 350 degrees for the last 17 minutes..." (that was since I flipped the loaf front to back to even the browning). I then suddenly realized it must have been a BREAD FAERY... I have read about them here at r.f.s. many times and have often wondered if they were just a joke OR just someone's imagination OR had been seen after someone had enjoyed too much hooch OR maybe they were just one of Dick's wise cracks (you always keep me laughing Dick... ;-) ). I kept thinking about this while the bread cooled and I was getting some work caught up for tomorrow. I just couldn't figure out what really happened... had I just seen a bread faery? As you could imagine, it kept my mind distracted from my work for a little while. I then realized that since I had the windows and doors open for a while today (southeast Missouri was warm... mid-60's) and I did happen to see a few moths that had gotten in when the screen door was opened and closed... I figured that a moth must have been startled by my sudden arrival at the oven and when I threw open the door, it flew through the area of the open door and as I turned back toward the oven after shielding my face for a moment from the initial burst of heat, I thought it came flying out of the oven. Now that story sounds LOGICAL to my left brain... but the right brain is still a little suspicious... My left brain just wants to reason it away and just can't quite accept the possibility of it being a bread faery. My right brain is thinking that I spotted a bread faery that was getting out of the oven after a job well done! I don't know... Here's hoping you all have a GREAT week and keep a sharp eye out for those bread faeries... as I am starting to believe... oops... typo... obviously the sentence should have read as:
....When my timer went off, I delayed for a few minutes longer and then ran up the stairs and threw open the OVEN while starting to grab for the oven mitts. ....darn spell-checkers... what good are they if they don't catch your mistakes... ;-) Denny -- I can be reached by sending to "my posting name" at that free, Microsoft, electronic mail service. Or, possibly, you had too much Guiness. Regards, Charles Oh, that should be capitol letteres on Bread Faeries. |
