Carl's 1847 Oregon Trail Starter Question
I have some Carl's sourdough starter. It says to add dried potatoes or
potato water. I have neither. (We never do potato anything in my house) What can I substitute? Or should I just leave it out and follow the rest of the instructions? |

Carl's 1847 Oregon Trail Starter Question
If you use just unclorinated water and white flour you will be fine.

I am suspecting something deep there - maybe somebody is keeping count on how many starters are sent out and how many of those actually read the instructions, find it odd and post questions. I have to admit that I'm one of the guilty ones who didn't check out the revival instructions, though I'd read through them before, but it was a while ago. I just logged on and read through them again. I think that, even had I read them, I would have passed on the potato stuff at least for my first attempt at revival. I'd already started my attempted revival before I logged onto the site. As it turns out I was doing pretty much the same thing that the alternate revival method the "reviving the start" link suggests. Now watch, I won't be able to revive the starter after talking about how I'd never had a failure in multiple attempts in making starters from scratch a few months back. -Mike |

Most folks find the file at: > http://home.att.net/~carlsfriends/revive.txt > well, I think, most innocent folks like me would go to http://www.carlsfriends.org then click on Download Carl's Brochure there are three options: - Microsoft Word '97 & later - HTML - Adobe PDF which all have the poeto info under section 3 That's the obvious way to me over the internet. Whoever put the unobtrusive link further down so it can be easily avoided... What's sent out with the starter powder nowadays, I dunno, when I got it, it was potetic. Whoever would do such a thing? > What's sent out with the starter powder nowadays, I dunno, when I got > it, it was potetic. An easy jump to apotectic, then on to apoplectic. Here is the straight scoop: any degree of misguidance, even imposition = of links (what do you do with those?), on a web page, throws the innocent=20 one into a state of apoplectic confusion. Thereupon the one sends his query to r.f.s, giving the good advice givers, pregnant with wisdom, the opportunity to queue up, spout off, and diddle away their idle moments=20 imparting their knowledge. A purpose is thereby served, and the noble = and=20 learned advice givers are kept busy and off of the streets. Some folks get the reference to Carl's memorial site as: http://home.att.net/~carlsfriends/source.html Unfortunately whatever numbskull did that page forgot to put a link back = to the main page there, so that would be all the information the one could = get unless he/she might know how to trim the URL, which is a whole lot less likely than being able to click on a link, which might well be out of = the question in the first place. --=20 Dick Adams <firstname> dot <lastname>at bigfoot dot com=20 |

Good, now, that you found the important item - then, why don't you put that item, the last option, on first place in bold//underlined/blinking/red/whatever and state that below are historical documents from a time where people had more time to dedicate to documents in different formats and still used poetos, sugar or whatever to get it going, which is now essentially unnecessary due to recent mutations in Carl's; nowadays, it's plain text, flour and water only without poetos - or whatever good reason there is and can be understood by most people without doing headstands to get the important option first. If he doesn't agree to that, he gets to answer all the poeto questions for Carl's historic documents dominant position and if he fails to do so, we'll tell his cat.
