Default Apple toffee bread pudding

My mother used to make a baked pudding which I can not copy

She buttered slices of bread on one side and coated the buttered side with
sugar. The slices were used to line a pudding dish sides. The slices
apples with a sprinking of sugar were used to fill the dish. The top was
covered with another layer of the buttered/sugared slices and the whole
thing baked in the oven

It was served with fresh farm cream

I would be grateful if anyone has a recipe - the quantities and cooking
times have eluded me so far, as has the treatment of the pie dish to allow
the toffee coating to come free !
