How'd you make out with your jelly for your Fair?

Thanks for asking, Barb.

I had already made a batch of Peach Raspberry Jelly I wasn't going to submit
because it came out so foamy I ended up bottling it with some foam in it.
Also I thought that out of the kettle it tasted more Generic Fruit than a
nice blend of the two fruits.

However in a later tasting it seemed good and I found a jar with no foam, so
I entered that (instead of the too-stiff Two-Cherry Jelly). Must have been
the right decision -- it took the blue ribbon.

Also, I tasted the dill pickles I made and they were plenty pickle-y. Since
I was running out of time to get stuff ready for the fair, I didn't make
your bread & butter pickle recipe -- next year for sure. My pickles took a
red ribbon.

All in all, out of 11 entries, I got 7 blue ribbons, 2 red ribbons and a
pink (4th place). They didn't give a Champion Canned Foods Exhibitor ribbon
this year, but if they had I would have won it.

For my entry for Mild Salsa I made the recipe from Small Batch Preserving
for Garden Salsa that includes carrots and zucchini, toning down the peppers
a bit so it would be very mild. I like my salsa with a heary kick to it,
but this one had a lot of nice flavor. The judges must have agreed because
in addition to the blue ribbon it got a Special Award ribbon.

What Fair was this, Woman? Congratulations! (Was that my Peach
Raspberry Jelly recipe by any chance?) Do they *sometimes* give a
Champion Canned Foods Exhibitor ribbon but not always? Bums!
Sounds like St. Pec and St. Vinaigrette will bow to *you*. :-)

It was my local county fair. They don't get that many entries for canned
goods, but I figure only those people who are good at canning actually
bother to enter. Well, that's my story anyway and I'm sticking to it.

For the Peach Raspberry Jelly -- I didn't know you had a recipe. I
basically combined a Peach Jelly and a Raspberry Jelly recipe -- half the
amount of juice called for in each recipe and the average amount of sugar
required. Actually I thought the raspberry overwhelmed the peach flavor --
does your recipe balance the flavors differently?

I was thinking that a recipe that was mostly peach juice (maybe 5-to-1 peach
to raspberry) would be good. I'd call it A Raspberry Kissed My Peaches
Jelly.

As to the champion award -- they announced it in the catalog and gave it in
2005, but didn't announce it and didn't give it this year. But the Special
Awards (like I got for my Garden Patch Salsa) were new this year.

This year they gave a Champion award for all the food categories, so they
didn't drop just the canned food one, but whatever specific baking and
cookie/cake decorating and candy-making ones they'd had last year. Since I
don't enter any baked goods (and with the heat wave this year was really
glad I didn't have to have my oven on) and since some of the folks who do
baked goods are crazed in term of the number of entries they make, I didn't
really have a chance of Champion Food Exhibitor.

Everyone, and I do mean everyone, who enters our local parish fair wins
$2.00 and gets either a blue, red, or white ribbon. Ribbons are based on
neatness, nice colors, and having the jar lid seal properly. Don't
laugh, that's the way they do it. No jars are opened, not even pickles.
I entered a jar of small cukes shoved into a pint jar, covered with
water, vac sealed the lid, put a nice label on it. Won the blue ribbon
for sweet pickles that year plus my $2.00 check. Never entered anything
again. I don't care for politically correct fairs. Don't know about the
Loosyanna state fair, three hour drive east of me so never bothered to
even look it up. Probably works the same way the local one does. And
this is a semi-agriculture area, lots of industry but still lots of
small truck farms, orchards, etc and we raise lots of rice, soybeans,
and sugar cane. Animal exhibits are great as the 4H and FFA always enter
prize stock. The canned goods, breads, etc. are called "The Homemakers
Exhibit."

Well done Anny! We're real proud of ya. I been passing up our local fair too cause
