Default warning: drying walnuts and butternuts

put plastic under the newspaper

In the past I followed the usual adivce and spread the nuts out on
newspapers on the floor to dry - nuts I had picked right off the tree.
this year I gathered fallen walnuts which had been contaminated by moulds
and things off the ground. today I lifted the newspaper to find it damp
with mould and stains on the floor underneath. Earlier I had placed
plastic under some butternuts and they have not stained the floor. The
stain comes from both mould and the dark yellow stain contained in the nut
husks themseves. I have cleaned the floor with detergent and bleach but it
will take a bit of sanding to get rid of the stains. the walnuts were
drying for just one week. I have also dumped the nuts in buckets of soay
water to kiil the mould, and set them out in the sun to dry before
bringing them back indoors.

We nail a piece of screen to the ceiling rafters in the cellar - then put
the butternuts in the screen to dry....
