Default Jars, jars, jars

A friend passed away last week, he was a good doctor and a good food
preserver to boot. Old time doctor, made house calls if necessary, ie if
you were old enough to not want to drive. Canned everything he grew,
fruits were made into preserves, jellies, and jams if the trees,
brambles, bushes were close enough for him to get them.

Anyway, this morning his eldest son brought me over 200 canning jars in
cardboard boxes. Said when the family ate all the stuff his Dad had put
up this year he would bring me the rest. Thought I had died and gone to
heaven when I looked in the back of his pickup and saw all those jars.
With the cases of jars I got from another friend weekend before last I
have, possibly, a lifetime supply. Immediately called another canning
friend and we split them up between us as I didn't have room for all of
them (closet and pantry are already full of empties). I believe my
canning buddy would have approved as he has most likely gone to the big
kitchen in the sky. Now I have to find someone to leave my canning
supplies to when I go. VBG

Never mind who you leave the canning supplies to -- who gets your pearl
necklace and high heels?

My daughter gets it all, she's the only descendant I've got who can wear
my stuff with aplomb. The rest all feel nervous about it.

Mind she doesn't get any of that aplomb jelly on it.

I spotted some boxes of jars at a rummage sale on Friday evening. The year
before I had passed up some jars at the same location because the
hard-nosed woman volunteer would not haggle. This time it was a guy who
asked how much I would pay for them. When I offered $5 he said he'd have
to check with one of the women volunteers. I expected that was the end of
my bargain but this woman took a look and said "OK". The guy helped me
carry the boxes down teh stairs and out teh back door. After sorting it
all out I had 50 hars I could use, a few I didn't want, and a small wine
glass. I paid about 10 cents per jar, somewhat lower then the going price
of 25 cents for used jars at local rummage sales. I'm good for this year.

A couple weeks ago at a community garage sale I paid $3 for an unopened box of
a dozen jars, the usual 25 cents per jar. The box stil lhad a shippign
lable showing that in 1998 it had been shipped form a warehouse in Toronto
to a store in Halifax. I bought it in Ottawa. Well travelled jars.

Finally got a potato masher, 25 cents at a rummage sale Saturday morning.
Won't get to try it out until next August.
