Put up another 3.5 pints of fig jam today. This time I whizzed them in
the food processor, cut back some on the sugar, added 1/3 cup lemon
juice versus the 1/4 called for and then cooked down to desired
consistency. Haven't tried any of this batch yet but it looks good.

ShirleyFest 2007 will be August 5 through August 12, 2007 at Crystal
Beach, Texas. Our daughter has rented a beach house that sleeps 12 for
one week. We're all bringing food and I'm bringing custom tee shirts for
everyone. Looking forward to my first real vacation since a trip to
Missouri in 1993.

Figs still coming in like gangbusters. the bird netting over the tree is
keeping the grackles out but a lone mockingbird was smart enough to drop
down on the ground and walk under the netting. Our rat terrier taught
the mocker what life is all about. I don't think he will come back as he
lost a few tail feathers in the tussle. Big hoot watching the fight,
toss-up as to who was the meanest critter, the terrier or the bird.

Sounds like good times all around. Whatever did you decide was your family
motto this year?
I made a fig jam one year offn' a receipt I got off the innernet. I wrote
down most of the recipe, but I might've spilt a little more cloves &
cinnamon in the dish than called for. Anyway, it ended up tasting like
mincemeat and was so good I got to eatin' it with a spoon. Downright
addictive it was. I recently came across the recipe if you want me to copy
it out for ya.
My figs are only as big as the end of my thumb and green, still.

Daughter and her hubby are hosting the shindig so they decided to call
it SHIRLEYFEST 2007. I guess that's true because it looks like all of
our legitimate descendants are going to be there.

thanks for the offer of the recipe but I make mincemeat out of pears myself.

Today is heavily overcast and drizzling down rain. Looks like a good
Fourth of July to lay around, eat some good grub, and nap. The Dawg is
napping already and Miz Anne appears to be nodding off repeatedly whilst
reading the paper. It's a problem for a vital young man surrounded by
old wimmen. BSEG

Garden is about played out so don't expect much else to preserve from
it. Yesterday we made a mess of gazpacho with tomatoes, cukes, and sweet
chiles. A cup at supper was tasty so will probably have other cups at
meals until it's gone. Keeps real good sealed in one of those cheap
plastic refrigerator containers and stashed in the fridge.

Happy Fourth of July to all you 'Mericans, wherever you may be.
Particularly to the folks in uniform and to all us old veterans too.

Geirge
