At my house, the preserving year starts with the strawberry harvest in late
June ... My 8 year old daughter and I picked 20 litres ($27 CDN) of strawberries yesterday (actually, we picked more than that, but the extras that I can't account for ended up in her tummy - 'one for the basket, one for me' ) and I'm cleaning them today. Have them spread out all over the kitchen as I type this. Once I get the Strawberry Margarita craving out of the way, and dip the pretty ones with stems in chocolate for a treat after dinner tonight, it'll be time to start jammin'. I'll do plain strawberry jam of course, but I have peaches and apricots in the freezer and was thinking of a blended jam...as in Strawberry Peach or Strawberry Apricot. Has anyone ever tried these combos? Barb? I just checked the Bernardin CBoHP and neither combo is listed. OK, back to the berries... Kathi |

Kathi Dang, Kathi, I'm pretty sure I've done strawberry-peach and wasn't all that impressed with it. Strawberry-Banana is pretty good. :-) I guess when I start thinking about combination jams, I talk to myself about how I'd like them if they were in a fruit combo on my plate -- or if they were smooshed together (the technical term) for something like a pancake topper. Or a yogurt flavor combination. Strawberries and blueberries are swell. Strawberry-orange is good, too. I might have recipes (fingers crossed). If I do, I'll look for them when I'm done defrosting my deepfreeze. Don't know if that helps you much. :-/ Me, I'd make the frozen peaches and aps into butter and leave the strawberries out of it. :-) -- -Barb, Mother Superior, HOSSSPoJ http://www.jamlady.eboard.com - story and pics of Ronald McDonald House dinner posted 6-24-2007 |

I know, the strawberry combo sounded different to me too...I may not do it - like you, I was trying to imagine what the 2 would taste like. I like blueberry peach and raspberry peach, but strawberry peach? Dunno. Will do some googling and see what else I can find, other than the obvious strawberry rhubarb, and your famous Strawberry Mango with Kiwi fruit (which I'll have to make again this year!) oh, and Happy Canada Day to all the Canucks!! Kathi Try Doubleberry -- strawberries and blues. And the Strawberry Banana is good, too. Have any raspberries? raspberries and strawberries are nice together. Happy Canada Day! I don't usually make more than one batch of most stuff. I'm caving in my dotage -- I've 16 jars of plain strawberry jam. Sam loves it, Rob loves it. Their command is my wish. :-) I just finished a batch of crabapple jelly (Dolgo crab juice from the freezer, 2004 vintage.) I have the worst time with that stuff -- it always has little bubbles in it. I should have just cooked it with sugar instead of using pectin, too, but I'm lazy. I've another bag of juice available -- maybe I'll do that one with only sugar. The bubbles didn't hurt it in the judges' eyes last year -- it won first place. (Who was it talking about bragging about our Fair stuff? Anny, I think. I hate to disappoint. "-) I'm feeling a little smug right now, too. I usually make twice as much work for myself as necessary AFA labeling goes. Long story. This year, instead of "coding" the jars until after the Fair, I'm just labeling them -- and putting the label on the top of the jar instead of the side. That should take care of the bad language -- those labels can be a bugger to get off the glass. I like Avery 5294 -- they're 2" diameter, I think. OK, 2-1/2" diameter. -- -Barb, Mother Superior, HOSSSPoJ http://www.jamlady.eboard.com - story and pics of Ronald McDonald House dinner posted 6-24-2007 |

I have been using the 5294 labels and putting them on the lid for years. I figured that way I don't have to get the blasted things off the jars. I can manage to get them off the lids if I want to enter them in the fair. Last time I ordered about 10 packs of them. -- Susan N. You're a faster learner than I, Susan. :-) I figured that way I don't have to get the blasted things off the jars. Yup. I can manage to get them off the lids if I want to enter them in the fair. After processing I identify the two I will enter and don't label those until time to put the entry info on a label. Last time I ordered about 10 packs of them. Remember where you get them? I think my last 3 packs came from averyforless.com -- something like that. -- -Barb, Mother Superior, HOSSSPoJ http://www.jamlady.eboard.com - story and pics of Ronald McDonald House dinner posted 6-24-2007 |

Kathi Hi - Your strawberries are probably all put up by now, but if you pick some more, you could try strawberry lavender jam. I add about 1/8 t (unsprayed) lavender flowers per half-pint of jam. The farmer at the market who sells the lavender says that it goes well with most berries. I also tried a few jars with rose water added, but I haven't tasted them yet so I'm not sure how it turned out. When I put some rosewater and sugar on strawberries for shortcake, it was very well received, so hopefully the jam will be nice, too. Libby |
