Just got back from the fair and I did pretty well, 3 blue ribbons and
5 red ribbons. I also won 1st place in the Soft Spread category.

Blue ribbons were for Pepper Jelly (it was the Soft Spread winner),
Pickled Beets and Dried Okra.

Red ribbons were for Strawberry Jam, Peach Jelly, Pickled Green Beans,
Corn Relish and Dried Tomatoes.

My breads (Whole wheat zucchini bread and Fresh Okra Muffins) did
nothing.

I entered a total of 20 items.

Not too shabby for the second time entering a fair and the first time
at the larger one.

YEAY!!!, Susan! Congratulations. Curiosity question -- were you
motivated by various posts here to enter into competition?

What kind of corn relish recipe did you use, did you use Miz Edrena's
recipe for the b**ts, and what do you do with dried okra?

Again, good on you!

Yes I was motivated by the posts here to try the competitions. Decided
last year that the country fair would be a good starting place. The
county did not have a fair this year so I decided to try the regional.
It is open to anyone in the state, but in reality, only people from
surrounding counties seem to enter. Hey, if you live in the eastern
part of the state, go to the State Fair.

I must confess that I borrowed your recipe for corn relish since I
made it a couple of years ago and like it. Also borrowed the
Cherry/Rhubarb Jam and Bread and Butter Pickle recipes. And yes, I
used the Edrena's recipe for the beets.

I will probably use the dried okra to put into soups or stews.

BTW I talked the lady at the preserving section out of last year's
Ball poster.

Haven't gotten it back yet so can't tell if it has been tasted. I may
try to talk to some of the people there when I pick my things up. I
will ask what they do taste. Pick up is Oct. 9.

Congratulations, Susan!!! I'm *very* impressed.

Have you figured out yet how to display your ribbons?

So far I have not made much if anything just for the fair. Since we
have a good sized garden I am mostly trying use the things we grow. I
do buy some from the farmers' market in the summer and the curb market
the rest of the year. But I do take extra care with some that I might
enter, as in make sure I use the Ball or Kerr jars and Ball pectins to
qualify for some the special prizes.

Besides, I can rest until October 15 since next year's entries must be
made after that date.

I may have to pick up a book and see if it says any more than the
sheets I printed from the web site. The only one that specifically
states point values is for the juices and it says 45 points for
flavor. Many of the other items specify that the natural flavor
should be preserved as much as possible. Hard to judge that if you do
not taste.

Confession sounds like you're admitting to a bad thing! I'm flattered
that you like them enough to give them a go and tickled that other
state's judging staff found some ribbon-worthy.

I will probably use the dried okra to put into soups or stews.
