You can't pick and choose what laws you wish to see enforced, or which violations are worthy of reporting to the authorities. If it's illegal then it's against the law period. There are laws against poker playing because gambling is an evil vice which is destroying society so by reporting these poker playing scum you are doing a public service. And to those who ask "how do you know that they're playing poker in their homes" well you just have to be a Good American and peek in their windows. Now this, my friends, is a well constructed troll. First, we have the bait, and stinky it is! "You can't..." is a time-tested way to get bozos to shout, "Yes! Yes I *can*!" (I am bozo hear me roar!) Then, there is the insult in the "evil vice...destroying society" because on at least two of these groups, we have a lot of gamblers or once gamblers. This is kinda like those double scented ant traps that gets both the sugar and grease loving ants. Last but not least -- and this is often left out by those brutish intellectuals on rsbc -- is the *hint* in "be a Good American and peek in their windows." The hint is important for two reasons. It allows to have actual discussions without having to wonder if the other asshat is simply trolling, while also ensuring that only clueless gits and busy bodies get ensnared in the messy web. My hat is off. Good day, sir, --Tedward |

We need to Force Law Enforcement to do their job! This is something we can all do to be pro-active. John Yeah sure. Then the next inititive is going to be people in Washington State reporting their neighbors for playing poker online. Then the Citizens on Patrol will report people's 'Illegal' home games. rec.gambling.poker is about the dumbest place to post shit like this right now. WE'RE under attack, our freedom to play the games that we want to play. And you want us to report Jose because he's picking fruit and gardening for our neightbor? Real smart. Once they're done reporting the illegals, poker is next. We'll all need to get ****ing barcodes tatooed on our neck to get into a casino. No homes games. No online poker. Half of us will be in jail... for playing a game. In summary: We enforce laws against them, tomorrow the moral majority will be passing MORE laws against us. Get your heads out of the sand, poker players are about to BECOME the illegals. |

I ain't got no problem with immigrants, illegal or legal. I have no evidence this is an externality that needs to be addressed. --Tedward |

Graphic Queen wrote: We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language...and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people." ~~Theodore Roosevelt, 1919 Teddy was a newb. Let's go back to Ben Franklin, who said: "Why should the Palatine Boors be suffered to swarm into our Settlements, and by herding together, establish their Language and Manners, to the Exclusion of ours? Why should Pennsylvania, founded by the English, become a Colony of Aliens, who will shortly be so numerous as to Germanize us instead of our Anglifying them?" That phrase haunted him. He regretted it, and his stance, once he really saw the plight of these people, and their spirit. Later in life he retracted this view point, leaning much more towards the views of his contemporary, Benjamin Rush. Rush was a proponent of bilingual higher education. Let's go back further. John Adams wanted to establish an "American Academy for refining, improving, and ascertaining the English Language". Congress shot him down. They said that a democratic government had no business telling the people how to talk, that language choices should be left to the individual. Teddy's ideas on language were precursors to McCarthy. If you don't eat apple pie, you're a commie! If you don't speak english, you're a commie! Etc etc. The cold war hadn't yet stiffened views enough to make Teddy's remarks a true loyalty test... but that was to come in the 1950's. At the time, the effect of his words was to ban the teaching of other languages in K-8. Yes folks, a policy that actually made us dumber and more xenophobic. Hard to imagine, yes? Oh, and immigrants are learning English faster than ever, by the way. Calvin Veltman (1988) concludes that Hispanic immigrants to the U.S. are now approaching a two-generation model of language shift--that is, of becoming dominant in English--as compared with the three-generation model typical of immigrants at the turn of the century. |
