I was thinking that maybe it was the World War II era. It's interesting to
see how times have changed. Now we would never allow cigarettes in school,
but vending machines with candy and soda pop are all right.

When I was in high school we had a designated smoking area. Smoking is no longer
permitted on school property, and that includes teachers in their cars. When I
was at university we could smoke in class. We could not smoke as in the library
or in labs where were were during neurosurgery on rats, and that was because we
were using ether, and the fumes are downright explosive.

When I was growing up is was not considered vulgar, ill-mannered, or
sinful to chew gum. In fact, horror of horrors, my grandmother
chewed gum! The only caveat was to never chew gum at any "formal"
or solemn occasion. I suppose it depends on where one grew up. I
chewed gum until I was ten years old, when braces were put on my
teeth. When the braces were removed several years later, I had no
desire to chew it again. I never liked the "traditional" flavors
of the various mints, or Juicy Fruit, etc. I liked the chewing
gums produced by the Adams Company, Black Jack (licorice), Clove,
and Teaberry, and a gum made by another company called Fan Tan.

Teaberry gum was delicious! But, like you, I had no desire to chew gum
after 2 years of wearing braces.

Were you allowed to chew gum in your school?

Yes, but not while one was in class.

Same here. Teacher would make you spit it out.

Going to public high school here, there is something that has
bothered me for a long time.

Chewing gum was forbidden in all grades. However, as a senior you
had access to the Senior Lounge, a place to relax and smoke
cigarettes.

Smoking was forbidden on school property, in or out of the building.
We had no student or senior lounge.

We had a smoking area outside and as long as you had a "permit" (note from a
parent) you could smoke between classes or at lunch provided you were over
16.

Do people still chew gum? I have not seen anybody do it in years.

I confess, Margaret, when I see someone chewing gum I get
an urge to slap it out of their mouth. (laugh) No gum chewing
around here.

I do. I chew it and I blow bubbles but I do NOT 'smack' it nor do I chew
with my mouth open.

Next time you're walking down a heavily trafficed sidewalk, look
down.

Those gum spots are like telephone poles. You don't usually
notice them, but when you stop to look at them, you realize how
ugly they really are. That's why chewing gum is illegal in
Singapore.

-sw (who doesn't have telephone poles in his neighborhood).

Years ago, during a trip with the family to Disneyland, I noticed they
had cleanup people going around with an aerosol can of FREEZE spray and
a scraper. They seemed to have a full time job scraping chewing gum off
the sidewalks in the Magic Kingdom.

My mother was a "closet" smoker. Apparently, even my dad did not know or

My brother apparently was a closet smoker too. During his high school
Latin exam (AP? back in late 70s) he was concentrating so hard on the
exam that he forgot where he was and took out a cigarette and lit it up
to smoke. The teacher and principle both apologized to my mom when they
called to inform her her smart son had to be suspended for that. We had
no idea he smoked. LOL

Maybe someone already addressed this and I missed it, but....

I quit smoking 3 years ago. I took up gum-chewing in place of
cigarettes. I'm down to about 1/2 package of gum per day.

I'm really REALLY sorry if my gum-chewing offends anyone, but *DEAL
WITH IT*, ferchristsake. Everyone gave me such a hard time about
smoking, I can't believe they'd have a problem with frigging *GUM*.

Jo Anne, who would gladly take up smoking again instead
