Moderate shaking was felt in Fukushima and neighboring Miyagi, the agency said. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage. Question:
Have you ever been in an earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter Scale? They're not "tiny" by any shred of the imagination; in fact, the word "moderate" does not describe "tiny." "Tiny" earthquakes are, by definition, called "micro-quakes," and those happen every single day in every seismically active location around the world; some in places like the state of Missouri, for example, where people do not normally associate seismically-active faults within a given area. Most people do not feel micro-quakes unless they are just below the surface of the earth's upper crust. In fact, most micro-quakes are deep within the lower part of the earth's upper crust which is why they aren't felt. A moderate quake such as a 5.0 has the capability to do some serious rocking - one near the Santa Barbara area in the late 70s derailed a train and injured passengers. I know, because I was in the mountains above that quake and it felt like the ground turned into water - it was a serious "rolling" type quake up there, whereas down below where it was stronger, it gave three pretty violent shakes before dissipating. I have lived in "earthquake" country most of my life; was born in California and raised near several faultlines, the San Andreas being one of them. Now that I live up north, we have many smaller faults and occasionally a 2 - 3 pointer will occur, which we *can* feel here, because of the fact that the water table is so shallow. Not that I agree at all with predictions that this so-called "prophet" has made; I knew he was wrong the first time I read him. God bless you, Feather |

Unless you're right on top of the epicenter of a 5.0, it's barely enough to cause a few people to stop what they're doing and mutter, "what was that?" If you ask 100 people if they felt the earthquake, 75 will say no. Keep in mind, Northridge was a 6.8. 6.0 is 100 times worse than a 5.0. 6.8 would be about 8,000 times worse than that 5.0. -- Uncle Vic aa#2011 Supervisor, EAC Department of little adhesive-backed "L" shaped chrome-plastic doo-dads to add feet to Jesus fish department |
